(The story behind and how I picked it): |
The Legend of “Horse Creek Henry”
It was in 1851 when he joined a group of 30 miners heading to the Klamath River in search for gold. While the miners stayed and founded the town of Happy Camp, Henry worked his way upriver to a place known as Horse Creek. With the numerous Bears and Mountain Lions, Henry knew he needed more than his trusty revolvers and scattergun for protection. On a trip to town for supplies he saw a Henry Rifle, the rifle dubbed “The gun you load on Sunday and shoot all week” and knew that was the rifle for him. On another trip to town, some of the town folk talking asked, “ Who is that man”, one replied he’s the miner from Horse Creek with the Henry Rifle. From then on he was just referred to as “Horse Creek Henry”. I don’t know if anyone ever really knew his name. He lives there with his wife “Horse Creek Hannah”. But how they met is a story in itself.
The origin of Horse Creek comes from a story told by Sergeant Sambo, a legendary Shasta Indian, whose uncle had a horse attacked by a Mountain Lion, hence the name.
Except for “Horse Creek Henry” and “Horse Creek Hannah” the above story is true.
