Recent News About Me:

My Chosen Alias (The story behind and how I picked it):
I was born in Opelika, Ala. in 1840 or thereabouts. My family had settled in Alabama and Georgia at the turn of the century but I always had itchy feet and when I was very young I headed north to Nashville, Tennessee.

When the War Between the States started I didn't enlist. I wasn't political a'tall. But when the Union Army invaded Tennessee and took Fort Donelson, the fighting became personal.

I fought at Shiloh, then joined all my kin in the Alabama 14th. We fought from Manassas to Sharpsburg to Gettysburg and were with Gen. Lee in Appamatox when it all ended. And we were all d--- glad it did. Out of the 800 or so who started in the 14th, we ended up with about 160.

After the War I helped my cousins Jesse and Frank James settle in East Nashville and get jobs at a barrel factory under assumed names. They told me about the freedom that still existed in the west so I headed out to seek my fortune. I've ended up in the Arizona Territory, where I speculate, do a little gambling and other not-quite-savory things. I read law back home so I handle some legal matters, too.

My handle, from the AL Dept of Archives and History: Yellowhammer is the state bird of Alabama, it's also called a goldenwing woodpecker or a flicker. When the Huntsville, Ala. Cavalry joined Gen. Forrest's men, the officers and men wore fine, new uniforms, whereas the soldiers who had long been on the battlefields were dressed in faded, worn uniforms. On the sleeves, collars and coattails of the new calvary troop were bits of brilliant yellow cloth. As the company rode past Company A , Will Arnett cried out in greeting "Yellowhammer, Yellowhammer, flicker, flicker!" The greeting brought a roar of laughter from the men and from that moment the Huntsville soldiers were spoken of as the "yellowhammer company." The term quickly spread throughout the Confederate Army and all Alabama troops were referred to unofficially as the "Yellowhammers."

I have kin in Durango and I head into the mountains when I need to clear my head.
----------
My persona comes partially from the story of one of my great-great grandaddy's, E.H. Floyd, who fought with the Ala. 14th. I really am distant kin to the James brothers--we share a Dorsey ancestor. And I do have kin in Durango. I was raised in Nashville but my entire family on both sides (after coming from Ireland in the 17th century) is from Alabama.

Unfortunately, I was born a century too late, as you can tell from these photos of my dad (in chaps) and me. CAS is the best way I can get back to my true roots....

Other information I would like to share:
I shoot vintage-style photographs, too. My photography web site: http://www.dorseyfoto.com. Interested in posing for a photo that actually looks 19th century, without the tourist crap one sees in the "antique photography" parlors? Send me an e-mail!
