I apologize for not getting this in sooner. I needed to confirm a name before sending it "to press." Thanks for your patience!
Flags were waving and excitement filled the air during the Elk County Fair parade, sponsored by the Howard Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, July 18. Floats, balloons and plenty of patriotism were on display for the parade theme, Red, White and Blue. The winners for each division are as follows: Floats -- American Legion Post 149 and Auxiliary, 1st place; Flint Hills Boosters Club, 2nd; and Elk County Cattlewomen, 3rd. All Wheel Vehicles (Adults) Bellar Family, 1st; ECCA, 2nd; Lisa Meisch, 3rd. Adult Costumes Annabeth Fish leading the Youth Development Action Team, 1st; Marjean Jacobs, 2nd; and Howard Lions Club, 3rd. Kids Wheels-Bikes-4 Wheelers (Under 12) Decorated James Bearden, 1st; Harley and Rebecca Town, 2nd; children of Jeff King, 3rd. Kids/Costumes/Pets (Under 12) Wyatt Fechter, 1st; Cousins, 2nd. Horse & Rider (All Ages) Lakin Wiseman, 1st; Reggie King, 2nd; Emery Moore, 3rd.
Fair parade committee members are Benji Crupper, Norma Barkus and Lynne Thompson.
The committee extends its gratitude to the following for their help in making the parade a success: Karen Highley of Wichita and Terrell Guillory of Howard, for accepting the difficult task of judging the parade and doing a terrific job; Penny Swanson, for providing and delivering the cold drinks for parade participants; the Elk County Community Choir, for singing the national anthem to kick off the parade; the Legion color guard for presenting the flags and leading the parade; David Criger, for announcing the participants as they passed by; the Howard Street Department crew for barricading streets on the parade route; Melissa Crow and Kevin Craig for helping to direct traffic, and Joanna Hunter, for directing traffic and dispensing drinks and candy to participants after the parade.
