Johnny R. "John" Wene, age 88, of Grove, Oklahoma passed away peacefully at his home on August 6, 2019.  He was born to Arthur and Maude (Porter) Wene on April 18, 1931 in Harper, Kansas where he grew up on the family wheat farm.

John graduated from high school in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving his county for nearly ten years during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He received both the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.  He also served in the Army National Guard of Kansas, the Kansas National Guard, and the Air National Guard of Kansas.  He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Masonic Lodge.

After his military service, John returned to Kansas, settling in Wichita where he met and married Lucille Jean (Townsley) Huffstetler on January 1, 1981.  They were married for 38 years.  He worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Wichita until retiring in 1987 after 21 years of service.  After retiring, the couple moved to Grove, Oklahoma where John was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, and the American Legion.  He enjoyed woodworking and collecting padlocks and keys which he enjoyed refurbishing. 

John is survived by his wife, Lucille Jean of the home in Grove; his stepson, Lynn Huffstetler of Wichita, Kansas; and a sister, Ardith Battershell of Columbia, Missouri.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim Wene; and a sister, Verona Olson. 

Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1005 Leisure Road, Grove, Oklahoma with a reception to follow.  Pastor Randy Hamill will officiate, and Masonic Rites and Military Rites will be carried out.  Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in John's name.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Nichols-Stephens Funeral and Cremation Services, 10201 U.S. Highway 59, Grove, Oklahoma 74344.

John Wene was the husband of Lucille Townsley who grew up in Howard, Kansas and graduated from Howard High School in 1962.  He was the brother-in-law of Robert Townsley of Moline, Kansas.
