      Good one. A message the signers of the Declaration told the world, though a majority of them sacrificed their wealth and their lives for it or lived out their lives in poverty.

     It is not simply a message of bondage.

It's reflective, to me, of humankind's eternal struggle against suppression by the minority in power, regardless of skin color, culture, beliefs, social class, wealth, etc.

I saw John Trudell speak somewhere back in the late '80s. He was affiliated with American Indian Movement at the time. His words were 'if one of us is handcuffed, we all are'.
