The Howard City Council discussed increasing the base natural gas rate from $11 to $20 per month at the January 16, 2017 council meeting.  The council decided to table it until the February 6, 2017 council meeting, to make a decision on the amount of increase to the base rate.

The current natural gas rate consists of a flat base rate of $11 per month and a usage or unit rate of $8.17 per thousand cubic feet.
Current Bill Example:  If a customer bill shows 10 used, the monthly charge would be $11 + $81.70 for a total of $92.70.
An increase of the base rate to $20, the bill would be $20 + $81.70 for a total of $101.70

The proposed increase from $11 to $20 per month would be an increase of about 82% or $108 per year.

During 2015, the council increased the base water rate by $21 per month, an increase of about 312% or $252 per year

The increased base rates for water and proposed natural gas would be $30 per month or $360 per year.

The City Council can increase city owned utility rates without a hearing or public comment!

If you are concerned about the continued increases in your base utility rates, attend the next Council Meeting at 7:30 PM, February 6, 2017 at City Hall, Howard, Kansas to voice your concerns.

Governments like to increase spending.  They need more money to do that.

BTW, where is the gas being purchased?
