“The average price [per acre] of land in the several townships of the county as returned by the assessors, is as follows: Liberty, $2.86; Painterhood, $1.93; Paw Paw, $2.13; Howard $2.67; Union Center $2.31; Greenfield $2.77; Wild Cat, $1.36;  Longton, $3.19; Elk Falls, $2.70.” [Oak Valley Township did not exist at the time]

“There is 418,080 acres of land in Elk county. Of this 183,186 acres are taxable, (deeded); an increase of deeded land in two years, of 8,898 acres. Still, more than one half of the land in the county belongs to the government.” [available at $1.25 per acre]

Now that is something. The price of land in 1878 is kind of close to what the property taxes are in 2011.
