I was reading that there was an accident 3 miles outside of Severy, that there were multiple fatalities.  Someone was saying that it was Troy and Anne Bell, of Moline.  Is this accurate?

Poetry / 1993
July 05, 2015, 04:25:50 PM
It's that time again, when memories stray
To a long pushed back yesterday.
The year, it was 1993...
The year that would forever change history.
Decisions were made out of jealousy and pride,
Decisions that would not unite but divide.
Decades later, the effects are felt still,
Accidently meeting, self-control is an act of sheer will.
A hug is given, one that can't help but be returned.
A smile is shared, one that honor has earned.
And so, a heart passes into history...
When life was young and you sat next to me.

The Coffee Shop / Elk County elections
April 07, 2015, 08:54:01 PM
It has been an interesting evening, getting to watch as the results of the election have been posted.  It is a proud moment, as an American, to get to see this most basic of rights being exercised by the public.  No politics being stated here...Just an overwhelming pride in getting to be witness to this process yet once again.  :) :) :)  Considering the state that a portion of this world is in, it's reassuring to see the common man having their voice be heard!  :) :) :)

Poetry / Christmas Dreams
December 24, 2014, 10:59:05 PM
Soft and swift on this Christmas night does the dream make itself known...
To those with enough love in their hearts to navigate the hours flown...
The dream of peace and everlasting joy, wished for every girl and boy...
The dream of more than enough to eat and a little something for each child to enjoy.
To dare to dream is to dare to believe in what eyes cannot readily see...
The dream is hope and hope is that which persists unto eternity.
This dream began over two thousand years ago, in a stable bare.
In that stable, in such humble company, Hope was found there.
So, dream on, all you of stout heart and giving soul.
Dare to dream until each person is complete and heart-whole.

Merry Christmas to all my Forum friends!!!

Poetry / Anonymously submitted...A great poem!!!!!
June 26, 2014, 07:52:13 PM
Wildflowers abound
Very beautiful to see
Some just call them weeds
(there's a bountiful crop this year)

A dog paws through trash
Refuse thrown away, no need
Looking for treasure
(I've been having trouble with a neighbor's dog knocking over my trash cart
and scattering everything around)

Rudy's Prairie Star
Brings us all the latest news
Only once a week

Politics / Michelle Obama gets Boooooo'd
November 20, 2011, 02:19:35 PM
Michelle Obama just served as a Grand Marshall of the Homestead-Miami Raceway final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup chase...And got boo'd.,,As much as I dislike her and deplore her husband's tenure as President...That was just rude on the part of the people there.   The newscasters there weren't quick enough to dampen the sound and the booing really came through.  The look on her face was sad, too...She kind of froze.  I wish there were still some sort of social decorum utilized in this country.  Just because you're part of the common populace doesn't mean your actions have to be base and common, too.

Politics / Will Kansas Be Next?
July 31, 2011, 02:59:43 PM
If you're a student living in Missouri, you'd better not be Facebook friends with any of your teachers – that will soon be illegal.

According to Missouri Senate Bill 54 that goes into effect on August 28, any social networking — not just Facebook — is prohibited between teachers and students. It's all part of an effort to "more clearly define teacher-student boundaries." However, KSPR reports that It's only direct social media contact that's prohibited; teachers are allowed to create Facebook Pages where all students have direct access to the teacher in a more public setting.

Inappropriate contact between students and teachers is at the root of the legislation. Senate Bill 54 is designed to protect children from sexual misconduct by teachers, compelling school districts to adopt written policies between teachers and students on electronic media, social networking and other forms of communication.

Teachers and students usually shouldn't be friends, anyway, so on the surface this sounds like a good idea. However, we wonder how this will be policed. Will the state be allowed access to Facebook accounts, personal computers or Internet service provider records to see who's befriending teachers or students? Inappropriate relationships will be hard to detect, especially since teachers and students engaged in such relationships would probably be concealing their communications, electronic or otherwise.

The question now is, will this new law pass a constitutional test? And who would step forward to challenge it?

I have never 'friended' students on Facebook...That is my private space, shared with my friends and relatives.  I give 90 percent of my life to my students...That is the 10 percent I keep solely for myself.  However, I am not sure it is the State's place to legislate this...And I have to wonder how long it will be until Kansas follows suit?  I suppose this comes as a result of adults acting like friends with children, instead of leading them in the mature, adult manner that they're supposed to...When those lines become blurred, then I guess it's necessary to re-establish them.  It just seems a bit of an overkill for the State to legislate it...I would have rather seen school boards make that decision and then be forced to find some way to enforce it.

Poetry / Rare, Indeed
July 07, 2011, 09:17:14 PM
Rare are the moments when trials are laid by
And a slight pause lets you gaze at the sky,
Where the colors combine under His hand
And He paints new hues upon the land...
The nightbirds call, plaintive but true,
As strands of grass bend, catching the dew.
A small sound, the soft chirping ensues...
Night breezes bring a relief too great to refuse...
The surface of the pond is still as glass...
The scene only broken by the flop of a bass
That gorging on food, mistakenly saw
What it thought was a bit that would fit down it's craw...
Up! jumps the sow, tailwalking the pond,
Tossing her head to dislodge the frond
Of the rattler it's just hooked itself onto...
I just laugh, there in the dew...
Life is good...These moments are rare, indeed...
When the world is at peace as the bass begin to feed.  ;D

Poetry / Humor
July 04, 2011, 11:20:25 PM
Once in awhile, you come across someone who can make you smile...
A bit of humor, here or there, that helps to pass the while.
This path we walk can get to be a long and tiresome load,
And a bit of humor can go a long ways to smoothing out that road.
It doesn't have to always be so gutwrenchingly dramatic...
Even just a little smile can make your day much less traumatic.
So lighten up your burden...Stretch that mouth UP, not DOWN...
Try a little smile instead of a petulant, self-serving frown!
