That was a very thoughtful tribute, Delbert!  Sometimes life throws us challenges that are just insurmountable, and as you recognize strengths that Dennis possessed, you are his true friend.  Edie, I'm sure his family also appreciates your special remembrances as well as kind thoughts from many others in the community.

I will be cleaning house, grocery shopping, and cooking today to prepare for Football Saturday.  Friends will come to our home to watch the OSU/Georgia game in the afternoon followed by OU/BYU in the evening tomorrow.  Football Fun!!!!!!

Wilfred L. Bauder, age 97, a resident of Howard, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at th William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, Kansas.  Wilford was born on April 25, 1912, the son of J.W. and Anna (Liebau) Bauder.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, Kansas.  Interment will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery.  Viewing will be held prior to the service.  The family suggests memorial contributions to the Kingdom Hall and may be left with the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1233, 206 E. Washington, Howard, KS 67349.

Gary Lee Wise Jr. of Toronto, Kansas,  born in Frankfort, Germany on January 1, 1973, lost his courageous two-year battle to cancer the morning of August 28, 2009.  Gary grew up and attended school in Eureka, Kansas and graduated with the class of 1991.  He was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation. 

Gary was united in marriage to Rebecca Ann Noble on June 8, 1996 in Marysville, Washington.  They shared over thirteen years of marriage.

Gary is survived by the love of his life and soul mate,  Rebecca Ann (Drizz) and his three sons, Jacob, Zachary, and Joshua Wise, all of the family farm in Toronto, Kansas; his parents, Debra and John Vogt of Eureka, Kansas and Gary Sr. and Teresa Wise of El Dorado, Kansas; brothers, Shawn Wise and his wife Angela of Fountain, California and Ryan Wise and his fiancee Rachel of Blue Springs, Missouri; grandparents, Vernen and Johnna Lou Martin of Longton, Kansas; grandmother, Ruth Wise of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Rich Noble and his wife Cyndee of Bothell, Washington; and mother and father-in-law, Ted and Sally Noble of Yates Center, Kansas.  Gary was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Jay and Annabelle Abraham  and Lorren Wise.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the family farm in Toronto, Kansas (356-60th Road) with a Celebration of Life BBQ following at 1:00 p.m.  For those attending the Celebration of Life BBQ, please bring your own refreshments and a covered dish.  The family requests casual dress.  Memorials may be made to the Gary Lee Wise Children's Fund or Friends for Life and sent in care of Campbell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 188, Yates Center, Kansas 66783.

Are the historical news items you refer to from your files or do you have a computer link to access old copies of Elk County newspapers?  When I go to Howard, I like to go to the library and check out the microfilm but was curious if there were maybe other ways to retrieve that information for us out-of-towners.

I saw in the Prairie Star last week that a card shower was requested for Mrs. Walter's birthday.  Sadly, she passed away today, just 3 days short of her 100th birthday.  She was a good lady who lived a long and wholesome life.

Fern Vera (Alderson) Walter, age 99, a resident of Howard, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Howard Twilight Manor.  Fern was born on September 4, 1909 in Elk County, Kansas, the daughter of Lorenzo Claude and Alice May (Parks) Alderson.

She attended rural school at Fairview, Antioch, and Pleasant Plaines  On January 29, 1931, Fern was united in marriage to F. Earl Walter in Howard, Kansas.  Fern was a homemaker and also loved to garden and raise flowers.  Fern and Earl made their home on the Walter Homestead northeast of Howard until moving to town in 1965.

Fern is survived by one son, Eugene Walter of Howard, Kansas; one daughter, Wanda DeWitt of Wichita, Kansas; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; one son, Alfred Earl Walter; one brother, Edward Alderson; and one sister, Nova Medearis.
