Greetings, Birthdays & Anniversaries / Merry Christmas
December 25, 2015, 08:59:39 AM
MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone.  Our night was crisp and clear.  The moon the brightest that it has been on Christmas Eve for quite some time.  Santa didn't need Rudolph last night.

Today is clear and bright.  The closest to a white Christmas that we are going to get is a heavy sparkly frost.  Does make it look Christmasy outside.

You all have a good, safe day, wherever you are.

The Coffee Shop / Today's Treat
December 14, 2015, 11:59:35 AM
Today's treat is a Cooper's Hawk that was perched on the arbor close to the bird bath.  He was definitely waiting to ambush a small bird if one flew in for a drink.  Daughter went out and made him leave.  That is the closest I have been able to see this hawk.  I don't think he went far.  If he was waiting for a meal, the bird bath or the feeder is always a good place to wait in ambush.

The Coffee Shop / Bald Eagles
December 02, 2015, 11:37:57 AM
I am starting a new thread on these majestic birds because the old one I found hasn't been posted on for many years.

Yesterday, on our way home from Wichita, I saw two of these mighty birds.  Not one, but two and they were miles apart.  The first one was west of Beaumont and I identified it by it's white tail flashing in the sunlight as it made a turn.

The second one was about a mile west of the 400/99 junction.  I saw both the head and the tail as the eagle turned towards us.

That is the most eagles I have seen in one day since the day that there were so many of them at the Winfield Lake.

Is anyone else seeing more eagles than usual in this area?

The Coffee Shop / Broad-striped Skunk
December 02, 2015, 11:30:08 AM
Here is something that at least a few of you might find interesting.  First, I hope there is such a thing as a broad-striped skunk, because I saw one yesterday morning.

It was about 8:00 in the morning and we had just loaded up to go to Wichita, but Daughter had started the car and was just sitting there.  I noticed that she seemed to be looking at something across the street, so I checked it out.  Across the street, inside the County Road Yard fence there was a white spot that was moving north along the fence.  Upon closer scrutiny, I could tell it was a skunk.  The white stripe was so broad that it seemed to be dragging the ground.  The only black on it was it's face, chest, legs and underside of the tail.

I have thought about this maybe being some other animal, but a skunk has a distinctive way of moving.  I don't know whether to call it an amble or a waddle.  Whatever it was doing, it continued to the north fence, then followed the fence west.  It disappeared soon after turning west.

Now, tell me what I was seeing.

Miscellaneous / Life's Little Pleasures
November 01, 2015, 10:04:12 PM
We all have our little pleasures. Children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, well, maybe not all of us have great great grandchildren, but I will bet that we all do have small pleasures that make us feel better about life.  I have a lot of little pleasures.  Only recently have I realized what one of them is.

One of my life's little pleasures is having a lamp beside my bed that I can turn off after getting into bed.  That probably sounds odd to most of you, but almost all of my life I have wished that I could have a lamp beside my bed that I could turn off after getting into bed.  This house is the first one that I have ever lived in that it is possible to have a night stand beside the bed.  So for ten years now I have been enjoying turning off the light after going to bed instead of turning off the light, then groping my way in the dark.  Each night when I turn off the lamp I experience a small feeling of pleasure and satisfaction of finally having something that I have always wanted.

Miscellaneous / Was There a Fire?
August 28, 2014, 05:04:42 PM
The fire whistle went off at 5:00 this evening and now at 6:00 there is a heavy burning tar smell in the air.  Was there a fire and where was it?  I didn't here the fire engine siren.

Miscellaneous / Christmas Past
December 12, 2013, 07:49:35 PM
Which Christmas in your past do you seem to remember the most?  For whatever reason.

At my age there have been so many Christmases from so long ago, it is hard to choose just one.  Perhaps I should choose one that I don't remember.   In December of 1930 my father's construction job was completed.  The next one wouldn't start until after Christmas and in a location a hundred miles away.  So my parents packed their belongings in Daddy's dump truck and with my sister and brother between them in the cab and me in Mother's arms, they proceeded to go to Grandpa's farm.  Grandma and Grandpa had a big house with plenty of room for a family with small children.  Only the four youngest children were still at home.  Mother and Daddy both were welcome help on the farm.

Unfortunately, Daddy's truck broke down before the trip was completed.  Somehow word was gotten to Grandpa and one of Mother's brothers was sent to the rescue.  He arrived in Grandpa's farm truck and we were all tucked in for the remainder of the trip.  Now for the memorable part.

Grandma had a real tree with real candles and they were lit.  Remember this was 1930 and there was no rural electricity, so the only lights on a tree were real lights.  My sister doesn't remember much more of that Christmas.  Just the real lit candles on a beautiful tree.  I imagine it was quite a sight for a hungry, tired five year old.  I am sure that I saw it, too.  I wish I could remember it.

Now I have shared mine.  Won't you share yours?

PS.  Jo writes so beautifully, I hope she will share a story with us.

The Coffee Shop / Do You Remember?
November 06, 2013, 11:01:28 AM
Do you remember when there was a fad of how many people could get into a single vehicle?  Do you know when and where this started?

I was a sophomore in high school in 1946 when one of my female classmates decided to see how many of her friends she could get into her parent's four door sedan.  She was also fond of getting me as close to her twin brother as possible.  So the first one into the car was me, through the driver's door.  I had to move over so her brother could be in the driver's seat.  By that time she had put at least three people in the passenger side, possibly four.  This left at least eight of our group for the back seat.  I don't remember that we went anywhere, maybe because the twin brother refused to drive with so many passengers.  I think we did manage to get the doors closed.

Do you remember?

Politics / Syria?
September 03, 2013, 02:10:27 PM
I would like to have the honest opinion of the people who know about these things.  What is the situation in Syria and what, if anything, should the U.S. do about it?  I would especially like to hear from our veterans who have been there, done that.

Politics / Al Queda Situation

The big news item is the situation in the far east causing our embassies to close.  Would someone simplify this for me?  I don't seem to be able to grasp the facts.

The Coffee Shop / It is STILL RAINING!!!!!
January 29, 2013, 10:38:45 AM
In case any one outside Elk County is interested, it is RAINING here and has been since about 5:00 this morning.  My private river that runs in front of my house has been out of it's banks part of the morning. and is still merrily running down the ditch.  I don't know how much has hit the ground so far, as I remembered to bring my glass rain gauge inside for the winter.  I don't think I need to say that I am enjoying the rain very much.

But I do need to say that I take credit for it.  Yesterday was so nice that I hooked up a hose and cleaned the bird bath.  That is something like washing the car or hanging the laundry out on the line or washing windows.  Never fails.  You might ask, "Why does your bird bath need a bath in the middle of the winter?"  Well, the answer is simple.  We keep it filled all winter.  The poor little birds need their water on cold winter days, too.  A bird bath heater keeps it from freezing, but nothing keeps the hose from freezing, so it is drained.  Our winter setup is a rubber tub like ones that are used for feeding horses.  It is placed in or on the bird bath.  The heater is placed inside the tub, along with two bricks for weight and to provide a place for the little birds to perch if the water is low.  It is filled by carrying the water from the house.  Needless to say, this rainless weather we have had has allowed the bird doo to accumulate and the weather has been too cold to carry the necessary amount of water to give everything the washing down that it needed.  Yesterday I hooked up the hose and using the jet selection on the nozzle, I gave everything a good strong shower.  Really cleaned it up.  The poor little birds didn't know what to think.  It didn't look right to them.

But, today, we don't have to worry about the water.  And when it starts freezing again, the heater will do it's job, someone will carry water for refills and we will all be happy.

The Coffee Shop / Bird Meisters

There are a couple of blue birds still visiting my bird bath.  Isn't this unusual and what are their chances of surviving the winter?

Almost missed this.  Happy Birthday, Bonnie.  You are the same age I am now, but not for long.  I don't how I could forget this date.  It was my father's birthday, too.  He was born in 1901, a few years before Miss Bonnie and me and another forum member whose name I will forego mentioning.  Nor will I mention our age.

The Coffee Shop / Color Blind or Old Age
October 31, 2012, 09:17:46 AM
I have a long handle dust pan.  One of those that you don't have to bend over to pick up the sweepings.  This morning I needed it.  I could not find it.  I looked the entire house over, behind all the doors at least twice and still could not find it.  Finally, I decided to try one more time in the spot where it is supposed to be, hanging on a nail in the utility room.  There it was, in plain siight.  The problem was that I was looking for a yellow dust pan.  This dust pan is green.  Is that color blind or old age?
