Title: E WASTE
Post by: pepelect on April 14, 2009, 04:12:33 PM
E Waste....What is it and why do I care?   .....Were we supposed to know about this..........No Tobina you can't find it a Tracy's Trends it is not the elk County second place  loser accessory. ....

E WASTE    is ELECTRONIC WASTE.

Electronic waste is anything that is out lived its silicone infused usefulness.  You can't just throw microchips out with the potato chip bag.
The elk county solid waste committee has teamed up with our little Elk Konnected standards committee to address your need to get rid of Ewaste.
Butler county received a E Waste collection grant for the 4 counties of Butler, Marion, Greenwood, and Elk.  FREE FREE FREE.....We just have to get it there.

They will take our old TVs, computers, cell phones, microwaves, etc.  Just what you need to complete our community service day and spring cleaning.

We are trying to coordinate a pickup schedule in conjunction with the recycle trailer for the big event.

STAY WITH US AS WE GROW>>>>>GREENER BY NOT TRASHING OUR LANDFILL

Excellent news!  Keep us informed about this.  I have some items just junking up some shelves that are in this category.  If anyone doesn't know, it's actually illegal to dump e-waste items in your trash.  I've been seeing a lot of information in Wichita and other big cities about this on TV, so I'm so happy that we have the same opportunities!

On the same note, but a little different, I know there are places in Wichita that will take used cell phones and refurbish them for victims of domestic violence, etc, but anyplace closer to us?  It seems silly to just throw away a good cell phone after only 2 years of use.

Pep; what other items are considered e-waste?  A/C adapters (plug-ins)?  Car chargers?

We received a brochure from ElDorado that has all the info.  The information is going to be in the paper either this week or next.

I remember seeing all kinds of computers, printers, phones, electronic equipment that connects to and from, tvs, monitors, pda, pagers, etc.

I will see if Kandy or Liz can post the brochure on here.

Tobina, I know that if you take the used cell phones over to the Independence police department they will take them as well for the same thing. I have asked them before and they told me that they do for domestic violence. You might check with them.

I'm almost afraid to ask this, but what becomes of all that stuff?

Diane, I highly suspect that it is sent to countries that have less stringent ecological laws where it is recycled and disposed of. Someone please let us know if this is not true, I know they do that with a lot of things that we no longer take responsibility for.

I have this mental image of little kids sitting in a pile of E castoffs taking it apart for salvage.

That's about it, Diane.  My brother was a TV man with his own shop and he always had discarded TVs to get rid of.  He also had a bunch of Mexicans that would come by and take all that he would give them.  They (the TVs) have a small amount of gold somewhere in them and the ones that couldn't be brought back to life were salvaged for whatever gold they could find.

And these days silver and copper is very desirable along with micro-chips. A lot of the memory chips can be recycled for other uses. Lots of memory chips used in toys, phones are failed chips that were used elsewhere, but still have enough memory for smaller application. Some chips are no longer produced yet still have application and are slavaged. A good thing I guess yet most of the folks doing the reclamation are not doing it in a green fashion.

Anyone know if this is postponed?  I drove over to Longton this morning and couldn't find anyone for the e-waste!
