In the 1920 census records the last name is spelled S-p-e-a-s-e.

Did you notice that Mr. Hefner's name was Loraine.  I would associate that name with a female.

This would have been the neice of Myrtle F. (Spease) Denton.  Oscan and Myrtle were brother and sister and Oscan's wife's name was also Myrtle.
