What rifle do you shoot (I'm shopping!)
« on: September 12, 2004, 04:09:59 PM »
I think I'm outgrowing my Rossi Puma '92 (.357/.38) and I'm looking to buy a new rifle in the next couple of months.   ;D

What rifle do you shoot?
Why do you like it?
What does your rifle retail for?

I shoot a malin 1894 in .357 Magnum. It is the 24 inch, octagon barrel model. I load with 22 grains of FFFg in a .38 Special case with a Snakebite Greasewagon Bullet on top.  It is as accurate as I can hold and much faster to operate than the Winchester Model 94 that I replaced. I don't remember how much I paid for it but I got it from Sassie Sue in Michigan City Indiana. Their website is WWW.KEMPFGUNSHOP.COM

You can get an idea as to prices there.

A '73 in .357 with a bunch of work done to it.  The 20 incher.  Regular stock.  I have no idea what they cost now!

I'm thinking about selling a 24 inch, set up pretty similar to my 20.  Less than 1000 rounds through it.  Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you the details.  Also got a fully worked over Marlin in 45 Colt....

I use the 1894 in 45, 1892 and 1873 in 357mag.  I like the 1873 the most due to the smoothness.  I have a faster action on the 1873, it will out shoot the others.  I used the 1892 in a shoot out and the extractor came apart and I had to buy the 73 fast.  The 73 is not a yellow boy, would not have one, front sight is to soft.  All rifles are oct'd and I also use them for deer hunting.

I use a Uberti Winchester 1866 in .44wcf.  And I use a uberti Winchester 1873 in .44wcf as my backup, both have 24"barrels.  I like the weight of these rifles.  My first rifle was a marlin 1894 in .357.  It was a very good rifle and I did not have any problems with it.

If you are thinking about using black powder any time in the future it would be best if you went with .38wcf or .44wcf because you will have no blow back with these calibers.

Marlins in .45, .357, .38 spec., all 1894's. also a Marlin in 38-40, but a Model 1889. Like the actions and accuracy. Cleaning is very easy as you just have to pull one screw to be able to clean from the breach................Buck 8) ::)Oh, yeah, average prices from $350- $700...........Buck 8) :o ::)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

I shoot an EMF Hartford 1892 in .45 Colt, caliber matches all 4 of my pistols, and it has been real good to me.  Years ago, before I got involved in CAS shooting, I had a ruger Redhawk and a Marlin 1894C in .44 mag.  that was also a nice rifle to shoot.

Lets see I have a Rossi 92 in 45 Colt, a 73 in 45 Colt, a 66 in 44 Spl. and a Henry in 44-40 ;D.

I shoot the 73 the most but sometimes it's 30" barrel is a hendrence.  I just bought the 66 and plan to do some work with it this winter.

I like the toggle link action rifles the best.  Most of the rifles I see have problems on the range are Marlins and Winchester 94s.

Let me see:
1.  Rossi '92, 24" barrel, 38/357 magnum
2.  Uberti '66, 24" barrel, 45 Colt

Both are really good shooters.

Thinking about: Rossi '92 with 20" barrel.

I have a 66 yellow boy from uberti. It is a nice rifle easy to shoot but sometimes hangs up with hollowpoint ammo which isnt a consideration in CAS. It was designed for lead slugs. looks good too. I also have a marlin 94 in 357. It takes a firm hand to work the action so it feeds properly.

66 Uberti in 38 special and a older rare fine 1873 Winchester in 357 from Uberti....  both guns are slick from the get go, and unless you really want to spend money on a action job, these guns will both shoot nice right out of the box.... :)

A 73 Border in 44/40  slicker than calf slobbers.  A Marlin in 44/40 as a back-up.  Both with full buckhorn sights and a gold bead on front.

Howdy,

If I were looking to upgrade from a Rossi, I would buy a yellowboy, a 66 clone.  Here's why:
It's at least $100 cheaper than a 73.
It's different and good looking.
It works as well as a 73, for most folks.
Great resale value.
It provides a taste of the toggle link action.

I bought a 66 early on, an antique finish 45LC gun.  It shoots very well and I sure like it.  Hope this helps,

Thanks fellas!  I'm price comparing right now, as the budget is tight with two little ones on the way.

Island Girl picked up my Rossi '92 at a recent shoot, worked the lever and said "ow, I could throw my back out with that!"  :D

I don't want to bother with "slicking" it out, but rather start with something that will be nice enough out of the box.

Thanks!

Sounds like an excuse to buy a new rifle ;)

Even the 66s and 73s can be somewhat stiff out of the box.  They seem to break in pretty fast.  After you get your new rifle why don't you start a new thread here about what can be done to slick it up some.

I have a 92 from Nate Kiowa Jones in .357 that is my current match rifle. Nice! Highly recommend his work on those 92's. I also have a 73 in 45 LC and a Henry in 44 WCF as well as a Taylor's 1865 Spencer in .45 S&W. Like them all but mostly shoot 38's at our local match as its more affordable and I never seem to have enough time to reload.... ;D

I have a brace of 92s in .45 Colt.  One carbine and a couple of 24" rifles.  I recently came across a 24" 73 in .45 Colt that I just had to have.  It's currently at my gunsmith's shop getting an action job and short-stroke kit installed.  I have a hankering for a 19" 73 in .45 Colt.  It'll probably be my next rifle purchase.

I really like my '66 and '73 Winchesters (Uberti) in .45.  Both were great outta the box.  I favor the '73.  Don't know why so many fellers want to use the new-fangled stuff made in the '90's!
