I am trying to make a simple Sourdough starter and my instructions were simple.  2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups warm water, 1 pkg. active dry yeast.  Mix all in quart jar. Let stand uncovered in a warm place for 48 hours.   Well I did all that last night and sat it in a warm place on a shelf, BUT I just laid a single sheet of paper towel over the top for some reason.   This morning I got starter all down the side of the jar and run out on the dang shelf..

Did I do wrong by putting the paper towel on it or is it normal for it to erupt like that??? it looks fine other than what had come out..

I don't mean to be a pain in the old kiester but I shure like learn'n and doing this cowboy cooking stuff.

Thanks for your help

Who ever wrote those instrutions should have told you to use a 1/2 gallon jar  to prevent that, other wise things are doing fine.  Post away and ask, thats how you learn. Wink

Here is a bit on what I've found out on building one.

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,5017.0.html

If you are not anywhere near somewhere you can get this yeast, hollor and I'll send you a couple of packages.

In your area you might just try the flour and water and leave the jar open for a day and cover, you may get a good wild yeast.

Almost forgot, I put a muslin cloth and a jar ring on my starters.
