« on: August 21, 2004, 06:04:54 AM »
Maybe a bit off, but have any of you cowboys done any hunting with Sharps 45/70?

I`m going to hunt moose with mine for the first time in October. Just can`t wait!!!

Frank, I haven't had the chance to hunt with mine yet, but that 45/70 Sharps ought to do a fine job on a big bull with a nice rack. Good hunting there pard.  :)

NF...

I don't have a Sharps... but I've taken elk, deer and bear with a .45-70 (Marlin).

Nothing wrong with a cartridge that will stop a runaway city bus   ;D

Pard,

I took a free ranging buffalo up here in AK, out in the Farewell herd.  I used a Browning 1886 SRC, .45-70 and one round.  That was in 3/03 and then in 9/04 I took a 52 1/2" moose on the upper Kuskokwim River.  Yes, I beleive your Sharps will do the job if you do. ;)

Good luck on your hunt.  Hasta luego, Doc Red Dawg

I shot a whitetail with my .45-70 NEF Handi-rifle. It dropped like a ton of bricks.

I wonder if a plain old 405 grain CAS boolit would do the trick?

I`m going for a 405 grain bullet and 50 grain N-135 powder. Wanne be a little bit careful with my Pedersoli Sharps.

Frank...

Try a 405 grain bullet over 70 grains of CleanShot... just fill the case, level it off, and seat your bullet!

And use a Magnum primer.

Much more satisfying than N-135.

Well, Pards, I never shot nuthin' but paper and steel with a 45-70, but if I was in your shoes, I sure wouldn't feel under gunned.  Best of luck on your hunt.

70 grains with Clean Shot sure sounds like fun ;)

But Pedersoli says they don`t guarantee the pressure over 52 grains with N-135 and a 405 grains bullet. And when it comes to blackpowder, I use it in CAS. But when hunting I like to see what happend after I pull the trigger..

I never shoot anything but black powder in my Shiloh Sharps .45-90  I think it is safer and certainly more satisfying.

No doubt Shiloh Sharpie, a blackpower load is more satisfying. But still, if you need a quick second shoot, I go for smokeless. Not necessarily because I`m anxious where to hit, but sometimes there is more then one moose..
But of course, my future dream is a big hog or an bull Elk over in US with a BP load! Somtime..

Well Frank....I never had a problem with a quick second shot.  With a good hit of course it is not ncessary, but since we all err at times the smoke clears quickly in the slightest wind and the fouling does not impede loading.  Also, a second shot goes where it's aimed.  If I had doubts I would use a duplex load rather that all smokeless; just haven't had the need.

Take care and keeps your sights adjusted and your powder dry.
