Ivory grips
« on: February 07, 2006, 11:31:43 AM »
I know I could not afford a set of real Ivory Grips for my 1860

And I tried contacting Buffalo Bros. ... their site said they are Temporarily out of stock  :(
what is worse they don't return my email inquiries...

So I continue to look for smooth, Ivory content, one piece grips something along this line for the 1860 Army ( 2nd Gen. frame )

anybody ?

Have you looked at Tombstone Grips at tombstonesilver.com?  They seem to have a good selection of styles and color variations.  I haven't purchased any from them yet but I plan on giving them a try in the future.  You might see if they have something to fit your need.

Major 231;  BTW I was a major 220 (Artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl!) in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
When I saw the picture of your 1860 Conversion, I knew I'd seen that picture before.  Page 401 in Bruce McDowell's book.  It looks like a "MYSTERY CONVERSION".  Likely converted in Mexico, always in .44Colt, and usually plated and engraved.  The unique feature is the 1861 Richard Mason profile of the barrel lug.
Where did you get it?

I wish it were mine, but it is For Sale

I borrowed the photo for illustration....

My plan is to add Ivory to my 2nd. Gen BP Colt, I've had it nearly 30 years.

It will have a R&D conversion and join my Opentop as my main match shooter.

Major 231  (Sir Roger Buchanan Vaughn Raglan ) Lord Raglan

here is the skinny...

Colt model 1862 Civilian (Conversion) revolver, rimfire. The serial number is 102XX found on the frame, barrel, and backstrap. The backstrap, and trigger guard are silver plated brass, with much of the original silver plating still in evidence. The revolver is stamped: Barrel, ADDRESS COL. SAM L COLT NEW YORK US AMERICA. Frame, PAT. JULY 25 1871 over PAT. JULY 2 1872. The serial number normally found on the cylinder is absent due to pitting in that portion of the cylinder; not consistent with the condition of the metal of the remainder of the revolver. Inspection of the wedge finds no serial number. The metal that replaces the cap-n-ball loading lever is fit so well that you have to look close to see it at all. The revolver is a rimfire conversion. The revolver function well but there is excessive headspace due to age and use. The grips are either Ivory or horn.

You got me!  It is hard to get a sense of scale with a photo.  I see it at page 327 of McDowell.

I always thought that the 1860 Richards Conversion was an "unusual' design, from a style point of view.  That lump of a barrel lug is ugly.  The 1861 and the 1862 conversions are much nicer.

Have you tried Eagle grips, or Buffalo Brothers?

I am also lookin for Ivory style grips to suit a pair of Uberti Open Tops in .38. Army size.

I have a pair of brass backstraps to be fitted when I get some grips to suit.

It is a risky business when they have to ship to Australia. It is near impossible to return if they are incorrect.

Open tops are a Gunfighters delight. Lots of style points as well.

Howdy Pards/Pardettes.

For Faux Ivory I like Bar-S grips, they are the ones who make Tru-Ivory.  The stuff ain't real cheap, but it is real good.

Just my two bits in the kitty.

Adios,
I have bought some cuffs and spur straps from these folks earlier this year. It was good stuff and they were excellent to deal with.

If a Colt style grip can be fitted I recommend Boone Traders in Washington. (boonetrading.com) they have the most ivory content of any of the poly-ivorys. They look great and age very well. The pix is of mine, I hadn't finished the final smoothing in that pix, and the little circle laying on the holster is a piece of 30yr old elephant tusk ivory. The grips cost $35.

Good Morning,

I just received my new Mexican Eagle grips from Gripmaker. We tried grips for the 1860 first but they were a litle small. Larry at Gripmaker worked on some new moulds and the result was excellent. The grips fit fine with minor fiting. Directions are great.

Those do look nice.
Can you describe the "minor" fitting?  I bought a pair of grips that were said to require minor fitting and I had to get the engineering corp from the Panama Canal involved.  :D

I leaning toward Larry,  my ownself.
I also like Buffalo Bros. but they are still himing and hawing about when they will have the new molds made.

If your fine with the fit after minor fitting I'll give Larry the order for a set of Williams Eagle
