Doc Holiday/guns
« on: August 14, 2004, 08:51:14 PM »
I have a nitpicking question about Val Kilmers Doc. In the first scene that Doc is in at the card table with his discussion with Ed, he draws both guns rapidly drawing the cross-draw with his right hand and with his left hand draws what appears to be a gun holstered butt rearward on his left hip. However he was wearing 2 cross draw holsters when he left. Did I miss something or would this have been a gambler would have deployed his arms? Maybe this was just Hollywood. Also am I correct  in my belief that Billy Clanton could not have ever been at the Birdcage as it did not open until 2 months after the gun fight on Christmas day,1881 ? Perhaps I watch Tombstone too much! Doc

You are correct about the Bird Cage. The Earps also came in from the wrong end of town. coming in from Benson, they would have come in form the other end of town.

The one rig he wad on was a Huckleberry rig, and I believe he was wearing a reverse butt on his right side, both of which would facilitate drawing from the seated postion. My understanding is that Val spent hours upon hours practicing with his guns.

Thanks for the info. I did'nt know about coming in from the wrong end. BTW Doc fire a side by side 3 times without reloading and they fire about 70 times by my count, about 2X what they should have. I still love the movie, but it's not perfect.

Editorial boo-boo with Doc firing thrice with a double.

As they are coming into town, they pass the Bird Cage. That would work if they were coming in via Bisbee (which is south of Tombstone).

The entry was dictated by the sun position.  To get the lighting and view angles wanted,  the entry into Tombstone was changed.  Good catch!  IIRC,  the 3 shotgun blasts was a nod to court testimony of the period.

Yep Pards we all are repeat repeat watchers of Tombstone!  Never get tired of seeing it!  Those small gaffs you mention don't take too much away from a very entertaining movie!  Alas, Curly Bill was so loaded on Opium that he just kept fireing and fireing and fireing his pistols.  They must have been loaded too cause they kept going off and going off irrespective of the fact they should have been empty for some time! Hey Marshal White was killed by an empty gun!

Still loved the movie! ;D

I read this was not an editoral boo boo, but a purposeful tribute to an older movie that made the same mistake.  I've also read that it was supposedly the second shot from two different angles.  Your milage may vary.

Reguardless, I will never tire of watching my DVD over and over and over and over and over and then I'll watch it again.

Yup! If you watch closely you can pick out that Docs "third shot" is actually the second, jist filmed from a different angle with another camera!
