More Victorian-era Canadian military photos ....
« on: February 04, 2006, 02:02:43 PM »
For general interest (assuming that there is some interest, of course  ::) ) I propose posting a few more Victorian-era photos depicting "things military" in Canada.

Since we are now into February, I'll start with a few more winter subjects - even though the current weather is actually quite "non-wintery" throughout most of North America.

First, personnel of a unit described as The King's Liverpool Regiment, with Wellington Barracks (Halifax, Nova Scotia) in the background.  If correctly identified, these are Imperial (i.e British) troops, not Canadain.  However, notwithsatnding the policy of making the Dominions responsible for their own defence, that is entirely possible, since Halifax was the site of the Royal Navy's major facility on the west side of the Atlantic, and Imperial troops wwere accordingly garrisoned there.  ("We'll let those Colonial chaps fend for themselves, but of course we can't entrust important facilities to them ...")

Finally, to avoid giving the impression that it snowed heavily only at Quebec, in 1884-85, here is 'A' Battery on parade at Kingston, Ontario, February 1879 ... (more cold lips in the offing!)
