Medal?

This is a picture of Eugene Ephraim Sparks, a distant relative. He was a private in the 1st WI Heavy Artillery regiment during the war. Is this a GAR medal or what is it?

I think it is a Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Medal.

I concur.  If it were the Medal of Honor, it would have an eagle holding the star itself.

It's the GAR Medal.

The Medal of Honor served as the pattern for it and the same artist had input in design.

A 'real' one - as opposed to one bought from someone 'other' than the GAR - will be numbered on the inside edge  of the lower arm of the star - with a letter 'prefix' that was the first initial of the National Commander during his tenure.

GAR = Grand Army of the Republic,  I own several
cast in bronze and detail on both sides.....

There were also Corp Badges during the war & yearly Reunion Badges well after the war.
Some of these also in my collection....
