What's the best leather to line a holster with? Also, are there any books on holster making?

Deuce- Even after making holsters for some time, I learned a lot from Tandy's "How to make holsters" by Al Stohlman. It gives all the info to make any holster you want, by showing how to trace a holster from your own gun. It's a paper back in large format, around $12. They will mail it to you.
It also has full size tracing patterns, plus carving patterns.

Good advice.

I still have my copy from twenty-five years ago - tattered that it is - and I think it's great.

The patterns will be easy to follow and with good leather and careful workmanship - will produce a good holster.

Decorating one can be an interesting event - but period-originals often feature a simple border edging and no more - so you can start slow.

They also sell some good spur strap and cuff patterns from Will Ghormley and you 'need' those, too...

For more ideas - buy a copy of 'Packing Iron' - by Rattenbury.

Good Luck,

Chuck Burrows (Nolan Sackett) has a holster 'how too' DVD out. He's a frequent poster here and a good guy.

All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream. -- T.K. Whipple

My preference for linings is veg tan.  It holds up better than others and won't harm the finish of your gun.
Usually a bit thinner than the face leather.

For books...
Al Stohlman
Will Ghormley

Available on dvd
Chuck Burrows

OK Dark Star, I was waiting  in line first fer thet new video.  Seriously, there are several good videos out, when you add in the one from Tandy by George Hurst and he does a bit extra on holster lining.  It seems that I remember a rumor going around at one time that Bianchi was considering a follow up to his orriginal, but thats been long ago.  I wish Juki would commission him to do an in depth demonstration on their sewing machines.  A relatively new book out is YEEHAA and it is marketed by HideCrafters but I think it has little or nothing on lining.
