Loading Black Powder shotgun ammo.
« on: January 12, 2019, 03:35:34 PM »
Winter in Wisconsin is a good time for this.  I've been loading one box a day of 16ga Black Powder shot shells.  New primed hulls from Ballistic Products, 55 grains of FFg Schuetzen Black Powder, 1/8" over powder card, ½" Circle Fly fiber cushion wad, 1 oz. reclaimed shot, over shot card, roll crimp.  Takes me about 45 seconds a round.  This is great SASS ammo that seldom leaves a KD standing.

Loading is fun when you're not shooting.  When you are shooting there's no time for loading.  Seasons work out good here.. .

And those misses were because you didn't wait long enough for the smoke to clear.  :)

We shoot all year, and I'm only home on weekends which has to include reloading and shooting.  But I can't complain!

I loaded up enough last winter and we had several rained out matched that I probably wouldn't have to load any for nexr season.

Loading 12 gauge BP brass shotgun ammo.  Casting and loading for 32WCF, 38WCF, 44 Russian, 44WCF, 45 Colt, 38-55, 40-65 and 45-70 gives me plenty of excuse to be out of the house (i.e., away from the Idiot Box) and in my BP Cave.

Saves my sanity, especially combined with the time required to empty all that brass so I can refill it!  ::)

Next, I need to load some 45-70 ammo.  I want to take my time and load precision ammo.  Due to my cataracts, I need all the accuracy from my loads in order to at least compete.  One thing I've learned is that orienting my brass the same way in my dies as I load it in my chamber seems to make a difference in my score.

I don't know if it's Dick's way, but one method is to file a small notch in the rim.
It is far better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt!

I simply use a portion of the head-stamp for a reference.

I use the head stamp to orient my rifle brass, both in the reloading dies and in the chamber.  After tumbling to a factory new shine, I put a black stripe on the brass that lines up with the head stamp.  Makes it easy to orient the brass when shooting.  I'm not sure if it actually helps, but I need anything I can do to get consistency and eliminate any variables.
