Curiosity Piqued so I enabled Google Fu.  Found the subject of our paramour.  Not overly excited.  Whenst hitting the "For Sale" signs, I ran across to sample examples that were offered in excess of SEVENTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS for an old parkerized 38 of no special significance.  WHAT??  Some peoples kids fer crepes sake.  $250 to $350 more like it.

I hate collectors.

Have I ever mentioned I hate COLLECTORS??

I don't mind the collectors but he new generation ::)  They just gotta have something and will pay stupid money for it.  It has really driven the whole collecting market wonky.

Three coats of nickel? Would the cylinder even turn?

Funny you asked,  The gun was quite solid,  end shake was nil , Rotation when in battery also nil ..but it did seen to have a tad of
under travel, very minor but still present.
The Grips were clean OEM and overall it was nice piece except for NICKEL  stupid nickel  :(

I like a nice nickel gun I even have a few but they were offered nickeled in the day...
not a pimped out war horse.

It was sorta sad , like lipstick on GI Joe....

Ah My Dear Major2

on the one hand, I concurr.

on the other hand, after the war it was "just another 38" , one of tens of thousands, and the "then owner" may have had it nickled
for the same reason many folks have had things armalloyed - that lovely gray industrial hard chrome that is nearly indestructable,
but which relegates said "thing" to being an ugly uncollectable but corrosion-proof tool. Makes for the perfect boat-tool,
spare-in-the-trunk, or off-duty piece.

Unfortunately, the price does not correspond to any reality we are aware of.

rather like the moronic imbeciles ( redundant, yes? ) who bid an item up on fleabay to over twice the retail price
of a new one.

oh look, in addition to using my patented catch phrase ,

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

you made me end my sentence in a propostion preposterous preposition!

A jam and fudge 38 swing out revolver of no particular extinction, er distinction, with an ugly finish and not necessarily in the same league as ...... say ..... a Python ...... or even a Diamond Back ...... or maybe an engraved, custom stocked Detective Special being priced at stratospheric levels is just ....... well .. not just.  Especially when you see it's a pristine sample example, as in unissued, inna box, wid papers (always always must have box and papers).  Not even carried by some low-level postal worker ........ ugh.

Now were we talking about the exact Commando that was in George Sr's holster when he went swimming with his Avenger, and were it autographed for provenance, I could see a couple extra Bucks for it.  Sheesh

I ever mention my aversion to Collectors??  Did I??

I don't think I'd be considered a collector ... I prefer Prop Master  :)

When I was called, all I was told " it was Colt Commando Revolver and was missing a piece on the yoke " ???
I knew some about the WW2 revolver's but before I went in I did some additional reading up on them.
Interest was peaked some, but when I saw it was nickeled... it ebbed .... that the consigner was asking a GRAND !  :o ... Elvis left the building !
