« on: December 05, 2005, 06:27:36 PM »
Greetings All,

I need some help again !!! This time can you help me to find a reproduction 1851 Officers Belt & buckle (the one with the silver wreath) that has the sword hangers with it & a cap pouch for cartridges.

I have & use an 1885 Cavalry holster for my Schofield, but have been unable to find the rest of the rig.

Thanks again for all your help.

Take care, have fun & shoot straight.

Try S&S Firearms - www.ssfirearms.com

Incidentally - the Model 1851 Belt Plate with the silver wreath is the enlisted version - though often purchased and worn by Officers.

An Officer was responsible for his own equipping and you'll see many examples of plates with wreaths - not necessarily the silvered applied ones - but integrally cast...

The early Civil War plates will have a narrow tongue and exposed loop, the later ones a wider one - while the post-1872 plates will have an applied loop on the reverse along with a wider tongue.

Scouts Out!

http://www.gunfighter.com/trailrider/tr_belts-buckles.html   Though not shown here, Trailrider will hook you up.  Tell him you're GAF.  He made the saber belt and buckle I wore in winning the best military impression at the 2005 convention.

Thank you, Sgt. Drydock for the kind words.

Marshal Lightning,

I have the honor to reply to yours of the 5th Ultimo.  I can, indeed, furnish you with the cavalry accountrements about which you inquire.

As was pointed out, the M1851 belt plate (buckle) with the silver wreath was the Enlisted plate.  However, as was also pointed out, many officers from before the CW through the end of the Indian Wars campaigns, opted for the enlisted plate.  The reason was primarily that the Enlisted plate accepts a 1-7/8" wide leather belt, whereas most of the plates made especially for officers were smaller, with an integral wreath, many gold washed.  (Modern replicas are simply polished brass.)  The belts typically seen for officers were generally 1-5/8" wide and of much lighter leather.  Many officers, therefore, elected to wear the more rugged enlisted belts and plates.

I can also furnish you with the GAF belt plate, which will also fit the 1-7/8" belts.  The choice of saber hangers depends on the style of belt desired.  Keep in mind that by the 1880's, the saber was almost entirely utilized in garrison, and left at the post for field operations.  Equipment in the field varied widely during the IW period.

Let's talk... :)

Howdy Gents,

Hanover Brass can furnish the buckle with an applied silver wreath.  Were $35 when I got mine.  Very well done.

Trailrider,

What is the cost of the GAF belt buckle?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Gentlemen:

I have the honor to reply to your inquiry of 8 Dec, Ultimo, concerning GAF belt plates.

These plates are made by Tim Parsley of Art Brass, 8261 Peaks Rd., Hanover, VA 23069.  Ph: (804) 559-3679, e-mail:  tim@civilwarbuckles.com  He also has a website, www.civilwarbuckles.com  but does not show the belt plate.

I haven't checked lately, but I believe the GAF plates are around $13-14, depending on whether the plate is the standard style similar to the 1851 Enlisted Eagle Sword Belt Plate, or whether other types of backs, i.e., "French backed" or three-pronged, are desired.

While I have a few GAF plates on hand, I usually sell them as part of a sword/saber/waist belt or as interchangeable with the 1-7/8" belt plates. When sold as the extra plate, I charge $14 plus postage.

Hoping you have the Merriest of Christmases, Happiest of Chanukah, Greatest Kwanza, as appropriate, and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year, I remain,

Your obedient servant,      :) :) :)
