Rifle 12XXX with BRASS outer magazine tube
« on: August 24, 2018, 06:18:54 AM »
Hello:

Just to note it here:

A N-SSA Forum post of 22/23 Aug 18 by "Spadegrip" indicates he has an almost complete rifle for sale as a PARTS gun.

He shared that the outer magazine tube is BRASS.

It appears the use of brass outer tubes on RIFLES reached above the ten-thousand mark.
Yes, it could be a retro-fit.

Anyone know why these brass outer mag tubes seem to be hit or miss, please?

Respectfully,
El Supremo/ Kevin Tinny

Don't know about the hit and miss, but both of my original rifles in the 3K and 7K ranges have brass tubes.

I think it was an attempt to fix the problem of magazine tubes rusting solid. If you clean the gun by opening the lever and running wet patches down the bore, water can run down past the breechblocks and between the magazine tubes. If you don't then take out the magazine tube and clean it, and the tube in the buttstock, when you go to load the magazine next, it will be rusted solidly in place. My New Model civilian carbine has a brass tube, my 1860 rifle is steel.

Tony, that is the best explanation I have heard for the use, or replacement of an outer brass tube.
This goes back to the cleaning of muzzle loading firearms, washing and flushing out arms from the muzzle end to clean them.
I always removed the mag tube, dropped out the breech block and cleaned the Spencer's I have owned from the muzzle end, with a dry patch through the mag tube when everything else was done and be reassembly. (but that is just me!)
The Troopers of the time would not have been taught this.
My best,

I have rifle s/n 22502 with a brass magazine tube. Removing this tube was easy thanks to advice and help from Kevin Tinny.
