YOUNG GUNS
« on: May 04, 2018, 08:14:08 PM »
I was 8-9 years old ( 1964) when I was allowed to go wandering around my grandpa's farm by myself with a single shot 22 rifle....I can't imagine a kid that age today wandering around with a gun with no adult supervision...
How old were you ,,and how long ago was it that you could go off on your own with a gun by  yourself ?

Had to stop and think.  Summer between 2nd and 3rd grade, so 7 or 8 years old?  The year after I was allowed to carry a pocketknife at home on the farm.
In my book a pioneer is a man who turned all the grass upside down, strung bob-wire over the dust that was left, poisoned the water, cut down the trees, killed the Indian who owned the land and called it progress.  Charles M. Russell

We lived in the suburbs and there was never any opportunity to go off in the woods on my own.  My dad gave me my first gun of my own on my 13th birthday, but it wasn't until I got out of the Army that there was ever a chance to go out on my own.

I'm going to say 10-ish  maybe a year earlier ...my Dad and I shot 22's Rifle & Revolver & 32/20 Revolver together before that,  it was about 11 for a double 12 gauge as I recall.

I was given the 22 rifle @ 8, Circa 1956 as  I recall .  It was then about a 20 year old Remington Model 341 Sportmaster I still own.
(built by Remington Arms for only four years prior to World War II.)
Until 10 (1958) I shot it with supervision , cans , bottles never anything living.

I don't feel like I missed not hunting  at least no regrets in that aspect, there was just no necessity.
But ridding the world of evil tin cans & glass bottles was and the odd old paint bucket or two down in the Keys.
when planets align...do the deal !

I lived on a ranch and was given a single shot 22 on my 10  birthday. [1950]
I was able to grow up in a time that has been long forgotten. So sad.
