Half and Full Moon Clips
« on: April 20, 2018, 02:47:47 PM »
Just was asked this, so here goes. In S&W and Colt 1917s obviously the use of half-moon clips is appropriate or our time frame. However, I cannot find out when the full-moon clips became available. Are these legal for Zooting?

Full-moon clips came about in the late 1980s - early 1990s.

The Model 1917 revolvers were only issued half-moon clips throughout their service.

Both full and half moon clips are allowed under AZSA Rules.

There was a time I also believed the full moon clip was a modern innovation.  Truth is the full moon clips were developed first and were changed to half moon design because the U S Army wanted something that took up less room on a troopers belt and/or shipping crate.

I've fired so many rounds through 45 ACP revolvers using full moon clips it boggles the mind, and I never knew this. Like others I always assumed they were a modern invention.

Thanks to you guys for the info,
Dave

I've got a couple hundred .45s in clips as I type. A great invention for sure. I also had my J frame cut for moon clips and carry a couple in my pocket as part of my edc. As fast a reload as a magazine, if you don't believe that just watch JM run his 625. Wow!

I tried these out in my shaved Webley MK V.  I'll never mess with steel clips again!

Bought one of these critters years ago. Fast, moons and demoons. Works great but it is pricy.

Back in the dark ages, the military had a nifty hand-cranked doohickey that would load half-moon clips.  A friend of mine had managed to acquire one in the '50s, along with several ammo cans of half-moon clips.  About once a month I'd spend a couple hours loading clips during a visit.

It was wonderful, I could load a thousand rounds into clips in an afternoon, with time to drink coffee and shoot the breeze.  The problem was that it didn't unload the clips.  Eventually I went to a 1911 as my primary shooter.

You might want to watch for one at gun shows or in your older shooting-buddies garages.  There were at least two in Lincoln NE in 1994, so they're still around.
In my book a pioneer is a man who turned all the grass upside down, strung bob-wire over the dust that was left, poisoned the water, cut down the trees, killed the Indian who owned the land and called it progress.  Charles M. Russell

Picked up another .45ACP, a 1937 Brazilian contract that was modified with factory sights and an old King's front sight! Was looking for one to modify into Indiana Jones' gun, but I don't think this one will go that route!

Hi Guys I shoot a 1917 & a mod 21. Loading the clips by hand is easy.  Unloading is a chore, so I got a demooner from Brownells under $25. works great.
