Cavalry Stetsons
« on: April 11, 2018, 09:14:20 AM »
My Google-fu is weak.  Can someone enlighten me on:
1. When the Cavalry started wearing Stetsons?
2. When they standardized on the colors of the hat cords? i.e Now Field Grade and Company Grade Officers wear: Gold and Black

I'm looking for correct headgear for a Cavalry LTC around 1890.

Thanks and Scouts Out.

Vietnam.

Prior to that, Stetson was merely one of the manufacturers of the WWI-era and Pre-WWII  'Campaign Hat'.

For that time frame, you need a tan Campaign Hat with a fore-to-aft crease - the 'Montana Peak' came well after that.

Branch colors hat cords came to be around 1910, with the new uniforms.

Get the 1883 cavalry with the star vent.  Cords were rarely worn, almost never in the field.  A LTC would wear a straight gold cord with gold acorns, but only in garrison, and rare even then.

In the Barracks right now we have a picture posted of men in the Phillipines around 1900, colorized, wearing these hats.
