Powder
« on: March 10, 2018, 01:22:48 PM »
Howdy guys
Been readin thru a lot of posts about shootin black in 44-40. Really got me ta itchin to give it a whirl. The gun shop thats fairly close to me that caters to the cowboy crowd carries reloadin stuff. Guys on here were sayin that Swiss brand is really good as far as keepin fouling down. Well, they don't carry Swiss, but they carry Grafs, which he said was a real clean burner, comparable to Swiss. You guys have any speriance with it?

What's your background in reloading?
Go with the Graffs in 3F.
Make sure you have BP lube in/on your bullets.
Windex w/vinegar is a great BP cleaner.
You'll have to soak your case in water an vinegar when done and before you tumble them. Remove the primers first.
Put enough BP powder in the case to compress the powder about 1/8" when the bullet is seated.
Have fun!

Grafs powder is good.
If they have any of the Olde Eynsford it's better.

Been shootin my own for round 30 yrs, just not much black powder, and that was only in my 45 colt "clone". All I've ever used is Goex. Quit because it was such a mess with cleanup.
Could never get my cases clean, just used soapy water in a milk jug. Didn't work all that well, so thanks for the pointers!

Isn't a bit of difference in clean up procedure between  blackpowder brands.

I've been told Grafs is Schutzen or at least used to be. I've used a lot of Schutzen and it's good powder. Get some you'll love it in the 44-40

Thanks guys! I'm hopin to be back down that way ( its nearly 100 miles from her) at the end of the month, I'll give the grafs at try. That'll give me time to mold a bunch of bullets. Maybe say 30-1 alloy. I've tried a couple molds with smokeless, and kinda like the rcbs 44-40 mold. Can't remember the # right off. Works ok in pistol and my rossi 92. Got some bp lube from lars over on the cast bullit forum. Looks and feels a lot like lpg lube, but a lot cheaper. Great guy to deal with. Just hope that bullet will carry enough lube for the rossi's 24" barrel.

RCBS makes a cowboy mold 44-200-CM 636 - better (for blackpowder) than the one you show - I have shot them both - the CM carries more lube and shoots clean. Worth a look ifn you have not yet ordered.

Thanks Greyhawk. I already have the other one been shootin it for a while now. I'll check out the rcbs one tho. Gonna need lots of lube to get all the way down that 24" bbl.

The better powder you use the less lube you need. The procedure may be the same no matter which powder you use but the more moist the fouling is the easier it will be to clean. It has to do with what kind of charcoal is used to make the powder. OE is the best. Grafs-Schuetzen is very good. Its what I use for Cowboy shooting.

Another shout out for Old Eynsford Black Powder. I have found it as energetic and clean as Swiss. Better price too.

I shoot that bullet in all my .44s (pistols & rifles) and see no reason to change. FWIW, Mike Venturino used this bullet as a baseline to compare other bullets in his published tests.

This is my chosen projectile in my .44 ELR guns. . . For those in Rio Linda, ELR = Extra Long Russian aka 44 Magnum.  My guns, thus loaded, run an entire annual match and await cleaning till after I'm back at "Meadows Edge", my home range.
