Trying to decide on my next Colt style C&B revolver
« on: February 05, 2018, 05:16:13 PM »
I’m wanting another cap and ball revolver to go along with my 1860 army, I want to stick with a colt design since I’m use to the 1860. I’ve been eyeing the dragoon’s and the ‘51 navy, but I’m also considering the walker, I’m not going to settle on one or the other just yet, I would like to see pics (side by side if possible) as well as pros and cons of the each

Well, your going to get a bunch of Opinions.  A bunch of stray thoughts.  Some Ideas.  NONE of which are going to help you.  Nor will photos, side by side.  Just won't really help you out.  Bunch of differences.  What you really need and MUST have is HANDS ON.

The Walkers and Dragoons are bigger.  Much bigger.  The 1860 is actually built on the 1851 frame.  The water table is rebated to allow the 1860's .44 Cylinder.  The difference in barrel weight coupled with the difference is grip size will change the feel and "pointability" between the 1860 and the 1851.

The only way your going to make a choice is pick em up and fondle em.  Good Luck.

By all means, go play with them! pick them up, point them  , wave them around, see if some kindly person
will let you shoot some!

I myself "thought" I was infatuated with and had to own a Walker ... until I acquired a pair of Dragoons.
By Thunder, those heavy monsters need wheels and a gun carriage ! Or at least a full-size horse with pommel holsters.
And a forked stick to keep them steady, as I do not wish to shoot myself in the foot...

I would consider getting a '51 Navy in 44 cal (I know, I know, ... not authentic) so you don't need another size ball.

Yep.... the advice is sound ....handle both,  its your decision and yours alone to decide on YOUR NEXT Colt style C&B revolver.

That is your NEXT one, then there is the next one after that and next and so on...

Now then if its a specific opinion your seeking and you'd be influenced by one man  :-\  ( say this man ! )  ???

36 Navy (38 converted) ( Hellgate is right, 44 ain't right,  he does have point ),  but it ain't right ! ( remember one man's opinion )

Next to my C&B 1860 Army's , and the 1st. & 2nd Richards Conversions there of , including a 72 Richard & Mason .
My Navy's are a close second....

You have only just begun your ride ... so many Colt Style's after that ....enjoy your ride  :D

Hey !!!!  .44 Caliber '51 Navys be UBER KOOL!!  Even if they ain't "authentic."  Tell me what's authentic about a Ruger (Har Har Har).  I've only built about 6 sets of Snubbies out of .44 '51s (for myself) and a bunch of em for "others."  Doesn't play well with "others" ya know.  Others don't like to Loose!!!  Onlyiest thing ever needs be "Authentic" is MONEY!!  Fake money is bad JuJu.

Hey; How about an 1860 with Navy grip and a 5 1/2" barrel.

That just might be a Sheriff's Model, made by Pietta.

Can't go wrong with a .36 Navy in my opinion. Accurate and fun to shoot, and relatively easy on the wallet due to the smaller maximum powder charges. Plus, they're just cool. If the Winchester won the "gun that won the west" title, then I think the '51 Navy deserves a second or third place award. Lots of people carried them for a long time, and they did a lot of hard work all over this country.

Shoot what fits your hand.  I have a brace of 1860 Piettas with Kirst Konverter cylinders and ejectors and they have become my go to guns.  I like to load 'em up with C45Spl, J/P 45-200s & 1.3cc FFFg Schuetzen bp.  Accurate yet recoil friendly.  Compared to my brace of ROAs, they are fragile, but I like the way they point for me.

My great-uncle used one as his "only" pistol til the '30s, and after that it hung on a nail behind the back door of the ranch house.  Of course, his father-in-law had two pistols and used them up til the late '70s (a Colt Dragoon and an 1860).  Just goes to show the .44s have more staying power!

Were we considering taking one to a Social Engagement, I'd opt for one of my .44 Snubbies.  .44 lets in more air   ::)

I agree with the handle them.  If you have a Cabelas near, they usually have a variety   I went to one planning on a Dragoon or Walker, came home with a Dance.  I do like the look of the Dance Bros.

I like the Dance too. It had the flared '51 Pietta navy grips on it which causes me to point high so I swapped them out for a set of Pietta 1860 Army grips. Now it pairs up with my 1860 Army.

You said you wanted another Colt style to go along with your 1860 Army. What will you use it for? Casual shooting or something like Cowboy matches? It will make a big difference on your decision. Something like a 51 Navy will feel similar to your Army(given the Army has a larger grip)even though it is a 36. They handle pretty similarly although I prefer the way the 51 points. The next big difference would be the Dragoons/Walkers. They are a whole different ballgame because of the size and weight. I think the Dragoons are a little more user friendly between those two, but that's just my opinion. If you plan on extensive shooting you will have fewer issues with the Navy. The problem with these darn Colts is they are all so neat! Once you start down this road you are lost :) and will need at least one example of all of them! Leave the little Pocket models to last if you intend to do any real amount of shooting. As others have stated, there is nothing like being able to handle one in person. It may be that particular gun will call to you and make your decision for you. I have the good fortune(NOT for my checkbook!) to live near Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop where they have a couple of display cases full of these things to look at. What a treat to walk in that place over the years.

Well I ran by Cabela’s, the 51 navy, 60 army, or the 58 Remington are the three I like, and since this is gonna be a belt pistol to go along with my ‘60 Army. I like the Remington but I prefer the colts, so with that said I’m torn between the army and the navy, I know the navy was never made in .44 but I’m strongly considering a 5 1/2 navy in .44

A .44 Navy with a 5 1/2 or 4 3/4 Barrel would be a wonderful choice.  If you find that is what you really like, take a peek at the EMF site and ogle the "Marshals."  Polished steel 44 Navies with 4 3/4 barrels.  Best made Cap guns onna market.  Barr None.
