30-40 Krag Penetration Test
« on: February 04, 2018, 09:51:05 PM »
Winchester 1895 Rifle, 220 grain bullet.  I can't tell you the MV.

See the photos.  I don't want to talk about it.

CCG,

I found myself laughing quietly.  You see ....... there is an extremely similar reason I don't own a Chronograph.  I can, however, attest to the specific velocity.  The bullet was moving fast enough to go completely through, as did yours.  (Don't ask how I know that fact).
The unit has never been replaced.

As a follow up to this, I am taking advantage of Competition Electronics' repair policy:

"Competition Electronics will recondition to working order any product returned to us regardless of condition for no more than ½ current retail price (plus shipping) if it is still part of our current product line."

They tell me that even though "someone" shot a 200 grain bullet through it end-to-end, they will repair or replace it.  I shipped it off to them and I'm waiting to hear what the repair bill will be.  They tell me that the turn-around is usually about a week, not including shipping time.  That's not too bad, so I'm saving a few Krag rounds to shoot it shoot over it when I get it back.

I'd be concerned about back spatter, Prof. I think it's safer to just shoot through the thing.  ;D

Nah.  Just insure your Glacis plate has about a 30 degree reverse angle on it.  Think "Panzer" but upside down   ;D

I've never shot any game with a .30-40 Krag, but it appears a 220 gr bullet in this cartridge will definitely kill...a chronograph!  ::)

Some years ago, I picked up a Ziippo Lighter.  Slightly used.  It had been run over by an M-60 Tank in a European training area.  On a lark, I sent it Zippo (Warranty Issue) and asked to have it repaired.  Two weeks later, I received a brand new Zippo.  The folks at Zippo included a short note asking what had happened to the sample example.  I sent them a note back  explaining where I found it.

About three weeks later I received another new Zippo .... Engraved on the side with "Caution (drop down a line) Tank Trap"

I can attest that the Chronograph only stumbled a few steps before succumbing. It took a while longer to track down all the pieces.

Coffinmaker, that's a great story!

Competition Electronics repaired my chronograph and returned it to me for $50 (shipping included).  It cost me $13 to send it to them via UPS, so this experience cost me $63, which really isn't too bad, considering.  The company had the chronograph for about one week before it was ready to ship back to me, which is good turnaround time in my estimation.  I'm glad that I didn't simply throw it away and buy a new one.  I think that the company was pretty reasonable and I give them credit for that.

Pretty cool.  One of the companies you gotta give a shout out about.
