Does APP powder get old
« on: January 27, 2018, 08:54:36 PM »
A local gun shop closed a couple of years ago, and he recently contacted me that he had several
pounds of 3f app left. I thought that one time I had heard that this powder gets old and doesn't
work as well. Anybody heard of that or did I dream this. He has a very attractive price on it if it's
still good. It's probably 5 years old now.    Thanks

I  have some that is a few years old and is a solid lump. I started to break it up but thought that might not be such a good idea. If it is still granular try it out same volume as you would use black powder. Check with Coffinmaker he shoots boat loads of APP. I have tried it and it is OK, but mostly i still use the original Gun Powder mostly because that is what I have a lot of.

If the containers are properly sealed and unopened, the powder should be ok.  If it is in one lump, pass on it.

APP same as Black MZ. If you open a container of it and it does not have lumps its rare. When you first pick up the container shake it you can hear the lumps. Just bump it on the side of your hand to get rid of them, no problem. When I pour the powder into the powder hopper on the press I always do it thru a funnel if there are lumps you will find them and can break them up.

If the lumps readily break up with shaking of rapping the jar then it should be OK. If it stays solid either pass or do some hard bargaining. I'm so cheap, I'd offer $2/lb,  take it home, bash it apart and use it in the shotgun. But that is just what kind of a lowdown cheapskate I can be. ;D

APP contains ascorbate a derivative of ascorbic acid.  Best to smell the powder and if it smells like sour apples - still good powder

I had an opportunity to buy some old APP. ($100 for a case of 12-I wish I had bought a lot more) The powder in the bottles was a solid lump. The paper seals on the mouth were still intact.
I was determined to use it so I took a 1/8" brass rod, bent a triangle shape in one end, chucked the other end in a cordless drill and proceeded to stir the lump.  It broke up nicely.  I put a piece of nylon netting over the mouth of my Lee Auto Disc(gasp, it's plastic) and strain the remaining small pieces. I crush them up with my fingers.  Shoots as good as fresh APP.

I use it in rifle, pistol and shotgun.

I have been shooting APP for a few years now .
Many of the jugs are in big lumps .
I brake it apart and load it .
Never had any NOT go bang .
I bought every can my local Gandermountain  had in stock when they was closing the doors .
At a 100 a case and I think I still got 3 or 4 cases of the stuff .
No issues at all.
