Toughin' it out?!
« on: January 20, 2018, 08:17:17 PM »
For the last while I have had a nasty cough without the other symtoms of a cold or flu. Early last week I noticed I was getting short of breath on my normal walks. I thought I'd tough it out.

A couple of days later there was a pain in my right chest. I thought it was stress from coughing. I thought I'd tough it out.

Nothing got better, or worse the next day. I thought I'd tough it out.

That night my everlovin suggest that I sleep in the other room, until the cough got better. So I shifted. Imediately I lay down I knew I was in trouble. I felt like I'd been kicked in the chest - left side now. I thought I'd tough it out until morning!

At about 6 am my wife invited me back to bed. I REFUSED! We're going to "Emerg" NOW! I checked in to have my Pneunomia checked out. Four hours later after almost every test known to medical science I was told I had many small blood clots, both lungs! I'll shorten it out, I was sent home as not in danger. I'd tough it out!

My daughter, a medical specialist, said you're not doing that! "NOT TO MY DAD!" I got on the ferry and ended up in her hospital, overnight just for observation. I am now staying with Daughter & SIL, both doctors. I will be on blood thinners for at least SIX months. I'm OK, but it was a close call.

At the pharmacy I mentioned toughin it out. His reply was that his experience that those who come in right away, don't need to panic, and those who tough it out, are often too late!

Watch Yerselves, Pards & Pardettes! Toughin it out can be dangerous.

Glad to hear you got help instead of the alternative; those symptoms were far above "toughin' it out" level.  One of our D-I-Ls had that same thing happen, spent a week in hospital, and on some kind of blood thinning chemical for the rest of her life.  Take good care.

I guess it was about 3 years ago, I was staying out here, and at the time we only had the little cabin. 10'x10' log cabin, no water, heat, or electric, and it was a brutally cold winter. But, we had animals out here to take care of, the wife and kids were staying with her Daughter... and I really didn't want to stay at my Step Daughters place with her family. After a while, I started getting sick, much like you, I thought it was Pneumonia. In years past, a trip to the farm store and several injections of Penicillin later, I'd be good to go.

Not this time. In fact, it got worse and I lost my voice. I went from being heard 1/2 mile away, to not being heard 3' away. Doctors were clueless. Long story short, I found one Doc who had a hunch, and a Pet scan confirmed it- A mass in my left lung. My wife was able to to get me in at the Cancer Treatment Center in Tulsa, where I started chemo and radiation. And all that time, I figured if I had cancer, it would be where I was having sharp pain near my temple. After a few months of complaining about that, they did indeed find a small tumor there as well.

After a total of 3 months chemo and radiation, I developed super powers, and can now turn into a huge green monster when angered... well, maybe not. But, I am still alive, and so far, still clean. So, Like Sir Charles said, don't wait too long. And I hope Sir, that you have a good diagnosis.

Yes, thanks for the replies; It is much better to deal with the trivial (within reason) - Quickly, than the serious when it is too late.

The reason I posted was not for sympathy, but as a lesson I learned, and figured should be shared.

Our community has been hit hard by the current flu epidemic. Seems a lot of those who attended the New Years's Eve party came down with various versions of it. My wife and I were among those affected, our bug hitting us before Xmas.

In a couple of cases, it morphed into pneumonia. We were luckier and it was just a matter of "toughing it out" with Ibuprofin, fluids and bed rest. Took the better part of a month to feel better and regain energy and strength.

Eight years ago when I was undergoing 37 shots of radiation, I "toughed it out" by taking long walks daily and spending my weekends hiking in the local mountains. Cost me dearly, but the alternative was to hang around with other patients, many of whom had already surrendered to the "Big C" and were just biding time.

Truly - what does not kill you makes you stronger. If it doesn't, that's the day the bear wins, but you went down fighting.

For just short of 75 years I have mostly been able to tough it out. Usually it is my "personal health manager" that sees I get the care I need. My Daughter is the one who rides roughshod through the medical sytem on my behalf when the chips are down.

Good to have such a "personal health manager" on your side when you need one.

Heard t'other day that Canada has just two Dr.s per 1000 people. That's just about Third World level and low amongst the developed nations.

That means a lot of people are in line awaiting treatment and clogging the system. I try like hell to avoid hospitals and clinics in general. I've noticed that they're full of sick people!

I do have to admit that in BC, the treatment for the "Bic C" is timely and first class. People come here from across the country for that reason.
