Best Sizing Dies for Chiappa 56/50
« on: December 31, 2017, 11:33:24 AM »
I have seen recommendations that the best dies to obtain for the 56/50 cartridge, to be used in a Chiappa rifle, is the CH4D set..  Recommendations are to call and ask for the dies to fit the Chiappa. Is this good information or will any set of 56/50 dies work?

Thanks
Bill

Just get these:   https://www.midwayusa.com/product/792857/rcbs-legacy-series-3-die-set

They are designed to work with the Chiappa Spencer, and Starline brass.    I suspect whomever reccommeded CH4D was thinking of the orginal 56-56.  The best there is, with a price to match, but for your application the RCBS dies work best.  DO NOT GET LYMAN!

Thanks for the info... One set of RCBS dies for 56/50 and a shell holder for 50/70 on order..  What would you recommend for a bullet lube/sizing die ??

I make my own lube with Beeswax and Olive oil, and load my Spencer bullets pan lubed and unsized.  But any .515 sizer die should be fine.

I bought Lyman and also picked up a 4D set in a trade later. Tried 'em both, and stuck with the Lyman set. What is supposed to be the problem with them?

The Lyman dies seem to be a crap shoot, with most folks having bad luck with them.    I have the Lyman dies, and they will not properly size or crimp Starline .56-50.  The RCBS set is a sure thing.

However, I recently aquired a .50-70 (Chiappa) Sharps carbine, and the Lyman .56-50 dies work great for that!

That Accurate bullet is a good design:

That lube mix suggestion works in rifle length barrels.

Suggest you go with the iron mold blocks for durability.

Bullet ALLOY may matter. Don't be reluctant to harden until it is counter productive on accuracy.  Wheel weight alloy is now all over the place so ratios involving it will produce erratic hardness.

Try 60:1, PURE lead to pure tin, then 40:1 and finally 30:1.  Hard bullets also have less feeding friction for smoother action cycling.
