Josey Wales coat redo
« on: December 14, 2017, 02:52:22 PM »
Just thought that I'd post my Josey Wales coat that I rebuilt this year. My wife made this for me before we were married 40 years ago as a Revolutionary War fringed frock coat. I was in a muzzle loading club back then. Earlier this year we had an upcoming JW match so I removed all the fringe, redyed it brown from the faded out uneven grey that it had become and built the leather button ties. It had the cape already. I'm happy with how it turned out. I thoroughly believe in repurposing old things instead of new.

I like it!  What pattern did she use?

I don't recall but if you look at any of the muzzle loader sites or reenactment sellers I'm sure you'll see one. A fringed frock coat is what it's called I'm thinking. This is what it resembled before I altered it. My wife, then fiancé and her girlfriend frayed all of that fringe, she told me how much effort/ love went into the coat. Kept the coat and the girl. I forgot but I also had the sleeves shortened by my local dry cleaners seamstress for the redo.

So it's basically the Rifleman's Frock you see finished and in kits.  That works.

Here is photo documentation of a similar coat worn by John Moss (frontiersman) in the Mojave Desert ( California, ca. 1864)

I have a similar coat and it is very serviceable.
