Removing paint, bluing, & anodizing from a West German clone.
« on: November 12, 2017, 10:40:43 PM »
I purchased at a Gun show a few years ago a SA .357 revolver that had been sprayed with Black paint to cover the worn anodizing on the grip frame and worn bluing.  So I am looking for chemical means to clean up the Pistol for rebluing.   Please helpwith brand names that could be used indoors.

My Lord

I use Citristrip paint remover....safe indoors cleans with water
for the Bluing White vinegar works ...and not toxic
Course Birchwood Casey Blue remover is good and faster.
.... Don't use Navel Jelly ( the new Blue will not adhere at all well )

AS for the Alum. buffing may be the safest , or send it out to be anodized

when planets align...do the deal !

I've removed anodizing while working on hotrods.  For large parts, caustic chemicals can be used, but it is a mess.  It can also be polished off.  I would recommend you take the part to a shop near you.  Look them up in the phone book.  Most will have polishing services.  I'd think a part that small would be relatively inexpensive to have polished and reanodized, as long as you aren't working with a custom color.  You can also have the part powdercoated, although it will add some significant thickess to the part.
