Richard:
The current "skirmish" format is really enjoyable, and can be downright challenging ... as so kindly demonstrated in some of these videos from 2016 -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAQNQjAFGMQ&list=PL3RChRKXZ0aW74y_obJnU9iR6fWUc3yMl2016 was the last year I was able to attend - I was registered, and had reservations at the Comstock, but had an unfortunate loss of a sister-in-law at that time and had to forgo attending. However, the General was kind enough to transfer my registration to 2018 (... so I assume I am the first registrant for next year! ... I also unfortunately missed 2015 ...)
You might even consider relenting, and competing in uniform ... although, as Pitspitr mentions there are a variety of shooter categories which don't require uniform .... I have continued to punish myself in that regard ... plus voluntarily handicapping myself by competing with .577 Snider-Enfield rifles. These are my field uniforms from 2014 and 2016 (and I did swelter through shooting at least one or two skirmishes in full kit both years!)
