Can you two tone and use vinagroon?
« on: October 06, 2017, 05:59:10 PM »
Most instructions I have found for vinagroon, say to drop it in the solution, let it sit, then neutralize. OIl. This would give a complete dye, going all the way through, right? But I like to two tone sometimes, using a resist and antique.

I don't see why you can't apply it with a rag, brush, Q-tip or any other applicator. It will color the leather wherever it touches. If I wanted to two tone something, I'd experiment with some scraps to find out what works.

So, it is like using a regular leather dye, only with a neutralizing step? You folks have me real curious about it, and next time I go shopping, I'll get the vinegar and steel wool and do lots of testing. It seems like the last few pieces I have done with Fiebing's Black, I really had to coax the dye to penetrate some spots. Even then, there was a lot of black that would rub off.

I've had it leave a light spot on a holster but it was a spot that would have been light with any other dye, anyway. It didn't show up until I applied the vinegaroon. You can see it about midpoint on the holster near the fold. It looks like a scrape but it isn't. I think any scar tissue might be too dense for any dye process.

I see the spot, and know how that goes. The say some skins are treated with something to hide the blemishes, and it doesn't accept dyes very well. I will say that was said of Tandy, but I can't believe they are the only ones doing it. I just keep hitting it with dye and hope the 49th treatment finally takes  ::)

This was a quality hide. It's just one of those things that shows every once in a while. I don't mind. It's how the leather is and that's what gives it character.

Let us know how it goes if you try doing a two-tone job on something.

You know I'm happy to show off what I've done. And the reason I specifically asked about two toning, is because I'm working on a  new shoulder rig right now. It's going to be black with a natural basketweave, and I just ran out of black dye too.
