What is the recoil like?
« on: October 01, 2017, 11:19:25 PM »
How does the recoil compare on .45, .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20? With full cases of black powder and standard size bullets. On a scale of 1 to 10, let's say the .45 is a 10, what would the others be?

10, 8, 7, 4.

That is on the International Sliding Scale, all things being equal. (Which seldom occurs.)

Great. Thanks for the reply. I do understand there are other variables besides the amount of powder but I think this gives me enough to get a sense of it.

Depends on the barrel length. A 4 1/2 in 44-40 scores an 11, the difference between a 45 colt and 38-40 is negligible, the 32 wcf doesn't offer as much recoil , but the muzzle blast is ear splitting, especially when loaded with smokeless.

The 45 and 44 are almost the same if they are both with 200 grain bullets. Only difference is the additional barrel weight of the 44. I'd compare those both within 1 point if both have same bullet weights. If you are using a 250 in the 45 then there might be a couple points difference.
