Extra Heavy barrel 45/75 rebarrel .
« on: October 01, 2017, 04:08:40 PM »
Yrs. ago an old friend showed me a very special rifle a 28"Extra Heavy ( Buffalo Barrel )  1876 Winchester chambered in 45/75 wcf .  The first look at it said it had been very well used was all business and no show. To me it was the best looking 76 Winchester I had ever layed eyes on . Repaired stock blue worn down to the metal where it had been held , a true warrior  of the past .  Not long ago that rifle became my newest old 1876 .As soon as my old friend said it would soon be mine  ,  I called Bob at Winchester barrels , and ordered a new replacement duplicate barrel for it . The original has seen many , many  rounds through it and is tired . The new barrel is being built to exact dimensions and will  be mounted on the old rifle when it arrives.  I know Bob will do his magic building this Extra Heavy Barrel  and that the old rifle in 45/75 wcf will be an excellent shooter again. Will post some pics when I can . ,,,DT

Could it not be relined or is that not as good of option?

Hey Cliff , hope your well.  This Extra Heavy barrel is not very common .  and I just could not re-line it . The new barrel that Winchester barrels  is making to replace it , will look like an original except with a new bore . Nothing during the fitting to the rifle will be altered. I'll keep the original barrel like it is for historical reasons . The old rifle is very sound and lock-up is tight , says somthing for the 1876 action  . It will be shot while its mine , and my old friend knew that .  I should get some long range fun out of the old 45/75 wcf . ,,,DT

The Extra Heavy barrel has been fitted , the wood made and fitted , sights installed spent quite a bit of time tuning the action on this one , great trigger pull and FP&BOLT FIT . Will range test in the white . Have three coats of oil on the stock,  , they will get one per day for a wk. then one per month  for yr . Hope I have the pic. problem taken care of . Well here it is my 1876 Extra Heavy Barrel 45/75 target gun .,,,DT

Thanks Greyhawk , good eye , the forearm is 1" shorter than original , just my preference . The but stock is a bit thick in the rear for target work but don't look to bulky in my eye . The barrel is just as the old one straight octagon no taper 1 - 3/64th in size 28" length .,,,DT

Was gonna comment the buttstock looked a bit fuller - you can see it in that first pic but that is gonna balance the look of the fatter barrel - this is a big gun but you got the lines of it as near to perfect as can be I reckon - well done - hope it shoots as good as it is gonna look.

It should be a shooter the bore is very smooth and has a small amount of choke at the muzzle , the trig, breaks crisp and I have always had good luck with the 45/75 wcf . My first 76 looks just like this one except it has a std. weight barrel . Same Winchester mid range tang and a sporting front . It has a very good bore and shoots as good as I can hold /see . It still is my favorite rifle . Cant beat a 45/75.,,,DT
