1860 Piestta Cylinder slot rebuild
« on: September 24, 2017, 06:48:14 AM »
After five years and thousands of rounds fired through my 1860 Pietta Sherif model revolvers, the cylinder slots have worn out to the point where the cylinder stop doesn't always stop the cylinder in the right place and the firing pin hits the rim of the cartridge rather than the primer. The slot is actually "peened" where the cylinder stop engages.

I ordered a new pair of cylinders and all is well again.

I was told by Kirst, that because these cylinders are designed to be drop in, and the diameter needs to be slightly bigger than the original C&B cylinder, the "stop" area of the cylinder slot needs to be relieved. Some Piettas don't drop the cylinder stop enough to release the cylinder to turn on the next cocking. This leaves VERY little material for the cylinder stop to bang against and after lots of SASS slip firing, they are peened to unusable.

OLD

NEW

On the old cylinders I'm going to TIG weld this area up and recut and adjust the cylinder stop for perfect engagement. Who knows, it just might work!

I just finished an Uberti for use as a CAS gun with a Taylor's/Howell drop cylinder. These also have a larger dia. rear section and of course are 5 shot cyls. which is the biggest problem. In order to get "true" perfect timing as a "five" shooter from a "six" shooter, the sear had to be lengthened, otherwise you go past the full cock notch for lockup. Correct timing has these occurring simultaneously. With the bolt block and action stop installed and timing advanced slightly for competition,  this close tolerance shooter will be "rented mule" tough for a looooooong time!!

I would think the bolt dropping (the second click during cycling)  late (or late timing) is what caused the "peening". The bolt should drop before reaching the locking notch. I simply remove the " peened" in material out of the notch to restore function in revolvers with this condition,
