1866 Trapdoor
« on: August 10, 2017, 06:22:30 PM »
Gentlemen,  I got to shoot an 1866 Trapdoor Springfield last night.  What a hoot!  That goofy u-shaped spring it uses for an extractor worked quite well.   What a giant step forward in technology for its day!

It amazes me the number of those things that are still around!  And what a great cartridge, when you consider it really was the first CF the army ever designed.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Definitely!  The .50-70 is my favorite cartridge in single shots.  I've got a line on where another 1866 may be.  Who knows?!

I got mine a month ago and have had fun with it. I live near Buffalo Bill's birthplace in Leclaire Iowa and have
done living history there. They don't have a Lucricia Borgia replica, so when I go back I can show mine. I would
really like to buy another to donate to their museum, if you know of one with a bad bore or missing internal
parts, That I could get reasonably to donate let me know.

I've got one with a missing sear, a bad breech block and barrel, and has had the end of the butt stock cut off, but I'm not interested in parting with my lamp. 8)

Someday I'd like to get a shooter.

I thought I had a picture of Lucricia Borgia, but I can't find it. :-[
