Hi Rich,

Not many options in my SRS serial # lists.  Closest to yours I find is 48627 - a Spencer Carbine issued to Company F, 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry in February, 1865.
So, maybe, your 48678 was issued to the same unit, maybe, guestimate, maybe ::) ::) ::)
