Classic Old West Styles Trousers Fit
« on: June 29, 2017, 02:11:02 PM »
Gentlemen, Does anyone know how Classic Old West Styles trousers fit compared to, say, Wranglers?  I can't find any fit instructions on their website and no one is answering the phone.

I have had mine for many years. They are full high-rise trousers, not the "rodeo cowboy - trophy buckle" fit. If you have a modern mans protruding belly you need braces. No matter, your vest/waistcoat will cover them!

I suspect you will need to supply a waist measurement taken much higher than your wrangler waist.

2-6 sizes larger than regular jeans.   Depending on the spare tire.  ;D  Dale, I'd guess you'd need to go just 2, should have asked last week cause I was wearing them all week.

That is why I still like trying my clothes at brick-n-mortar stores, like Hamilton Dry Goods. Clothes even though they came from the same manufacturer never fit the same. Now I can see why my girlfriend hates trying on clothes. If you have to do online ordering  the safe rule I would agree with the others is order  sizes 2-6 inches bigger than normal fit.

Well, I discovered I had a pair I bought years ago, and the 38 fits just about perfectly. We'll see if the new ones fit the same.

Today’s 38 is often a 41 of yester-year thanks to “vanity sizing.” Your best bet is probably to measure your waist with a cloth tape and then ask the company what size you should get. Keep in mind you can always hold ‘em up with suspenders if they get too loose, but if they get too tight you’re out of luck.

I’m a scrawny runt, and I have a heck of a time finding pants that fit. Wrangler seems to be one of the few companies that is still keeping their sizing fairly true.

That's exactly my size and exactly my experience with the wahmaker/scully pants.
Thank goodness for my tough cotton canvas suspenders and their heavy lifting ability.
O.P.: I'd go  4" over your jeans size, and use the adjuster buckle in the back to tune the fit.
Equip a good pair of suspenders, too.

I wear mine the exact size as jeans 32, but Im sort of thin, they do ride high. What size do you need? I have an old 38 that is now too big.

Went in looking for a pair today.  The Wahs were heavier material in general, and fit better.  When I tried FC I had to go up a size larger in the waist so I could find a pair with the legs big enough around to fit my thighs.  That larger size in the Wahs would be slightly large in the waist, but the legs were huge.  There was a fair bit of difference from one pair to the next even within the same brand.  I'll be ging back and just finding the best compromise.  A good chance I'll go with the larger size, then take the legs in a bit.  The other option is going to be to find a pattern and make them to fit myself.

Measure just under your belly button.  Instead of under your belly and across the hips.

I normally wear 36 jeans and wear 38 in FC or Hamiltons. Wah's just don't fit me at all and I would need at least a 40 in them.

For most brands I find 2" larger than my Wranglers works. I tried on a couple pairs from another Pard to get the size down before ordering. I now have about 8 pair, some new some used and they all fit a little different.  Some look like I've got a pant load and have to tighten up the suspenders. I only notice this in pictures as I rarely look at myself from behind!

Wranglers fit your waist, while period pants need to fit your belly. Measure accordingly. There isn't any real correlation between the two types of pants that would be a universal rule. I normally need a "relaxed fit" but have no belly. I found my Frontier Classics to be true to the size of my other relaxed fit jeans.

Remember, as Del and others regularly point out, "Old West " styles were loose fitting pants, with a high waist
compared to todays.

Here is a useful picture, shamelessly stolen form the interwebs, that illustrates the idea, with moderisch clothes:
