Question on Whisper Spring after install
« on: May 23, 2017, 05:07:46 PM »
After getting thru the trauma of removing one of the side lever screws I acquired and installed a Whisper Spring  kits from the Smith Shop.
The  '73 carbine  feeds , chambers and ejects normally. Have not had a chance to test fire. Once the lever is closed it hangs down about an inch in the back if the latch is not used. Is this normal or do I need to adjust the Spring isome more?

The lever spring should hold the lever up against the lower tang.  So yes, it needs some adjusting.  It should also hold the open lever all the way open.

I will do what Abilene said and go back to working with that Spring. I now know what to adjust the lever for.  Thanks for the help!

I've never had to adjust one. Is the cam on the lever worn from the gosh awful truck leaf springs that were on it?

The carbine was bought Used but in new condition. I had less than a hundred rounds thru it and the cam looks good.  The Smith Shop  site has instructions that indicate the Spring tension may have to be adjusted.

My project Spanish Carbine also has the droopyleveritis disease. Or is this a poor mans short stroke adjustment?  Pardon my ignorance but what exactly do you adjust? Bend the wire which way?

As you look at the spring "in the frame" the wire needs bent down toward the frame to apply more pressure on the lever cam.  A little goes a long way.

You gave me such a fast reply that I went right to my sick carbine and did as you spoke and now the lever defies gravity with only the lever safety holding it slightly away from the lower tang. It's cured! You are one with the Force, Obi Wan

Ah Ed,
Hopefully you have changed out the Trigger Block Safety Spring??  The OEM spring is worse than useless.

Yes I did. It positively engages but easily disengages. No death grip needed.

Using the coil lever safety spring from The Smith Shop the whisper springs in mine hold the lever completely closed over riding the lever safety spring.

The recent Uberti's have gone to the coil type lever safety spring. Much easier to close the lever but still much harder than the one from The Smith Shop.

Went back and adjusted the lever Spring some more and it now holds in open and closed positions. The factory original lever safety Spring will push the lever down slightly so may have to put the Smith spring in. Thanks for the advice! Now I will need to go to the range and test fire it. That new main Spring from The Smith Store is really light and I will feel more confident once I have run a box of my reloads thru it.

Went to the range with my uberti 1873 SRC with the Whisper springs and put 50 rounds of 38-40 thru it. Smooth as silk and no failures to fire.
I'm a happy camper now and do appreciate all the advice that has helped me get things straight.

Changed the Trigger Block safety on my 73, works great. The lever stays up against the lower tang now, is this normal as the new spring is very light, but still lets the safety work?

That's normal for the lever to stay up with the lighter lever safety spring. The safety should still work if the lever is down but only you can test that, we can't say without seeing the gun.

CF, I checked it and the safety works okay, as the hammer will not fall until the bolt is in battery as it should.
Thanks,
Reno
