Mine is .427, but it was made in the last century, late 1980s. Don't know what they are doing now. My revolver from 2000 is .429.

YMMV.

Too be honest, it could be almost anything.  Depends on if your rifle is "new old Stock" or actually "new."  I personally wouldn't begin to guess.  Wait till you get it, drive s soft ball thru it then mic it.  If you wish to be precise, Grasshopper, don't guess ........ KNOW.

Slugging is the "correct" way, but most people guess .429 and do fine.  Uberti specs are .429.

Every one that I have slugged that was made in the last 10 years or so have been .429 or real dang close.

I use .429 bullets in mine.

My 2011 short rifle slugged at .429.  Using .430 bullets didn't allow for free chambering, so I use .429 bullets and it works great.

I have an older 66 (1986) that slugs between .427-8. Same slug drops thru my new Winchester.

I slugged my uberti 73 and it came out at .430 and I purchased it new about 2 years ago. I haven't tried to see if I can chamber a round with a .430 projectile in it yet as the .428 shoot well with smokeless and leave no lead in the barrel so I'm happy ;D

I have seen Ubertis vary from .427 to .430, original Winchesters from .426 to .429, and Malins, new and old from .428 to .431!"  My remedy is to load .428s, and they shoot well in no matter what .44-40 I shoot.  Even when I have given rounds to others at matches, they work for them.  My Rossi 92 in .44-40 LOVES the .428s, shooting clover leafs at 25 yards.

Well, I've got a Uberti 1873 Winchester .44-40.   So far I've been shooting .427 Hardcast Hunter Supply bullets in it.  Seems to "like them".  I don't notice any real leading in the barrel from what I can see (but it is a little difficult get a good look in the front of the bore).  Seems to shoot pretty accurate too.    I don't know if the bore is bigger than that, but so far I've got no complaints and the gun is doing everything I've ask it to do and more.

My wife is shooting an older Navy Arms Schofield and was also shooting an older navy Arms 73 in 44-40 that are both .427 so I have been loading her .427 for all her ammo. The same ammo is shooting fine in her new 1873 which actually slugs .429

As long as the bullets arent too hard I think they bump up to work with the bore. Not sure it's the best for long range accuracy but for anything within 50 yards it seems to do just fine. She'll hit the bonus targets more than most of us so they must be working.

Uberti specs them at .429 and they are pretty consistent these days.  I was shooting .429 in my Uberti '73 carbine but even with Winchester brass it was a little persnickety at times, so I tried .427 and haven't looked back.  Mostly just BP in this rifle.  The bullets are commercial 200gr with a small lube groove which I relube with my mix, but it seems to hold enough for a 19" barrel and accuracy is fine.  The Texican Rangers just started a sharpshooter category, rifle targets are all 50 yards.  I did very well with the .44

I was having problems getting a .429 to chamber so I went to .427 and it still shoots better than I can hold it.

Cimarron's site says .429.  I've slugged all of my Uberti's which includes a 73 purchased from them a year ago and they all measure .430 - .4305".   I have shot the 73 very little but my 60 and 66 are indifferent to .429 - .431" bullets cast of 1:20 or softer.

Not a 73, but I have three Uberti 66s in 44-40. I have always used my own bullets(from a variety of molds) cast at .428 and they all chamber freely. This with every brand of brass I have(Starline, Winchester & Remington). I would assume Uberti would use the same barrel dimensions on the 66s & 73s. The .428 sized bullets also work without issue in all the Uberti and Colt pistols I have in 44-40.

FYI, what you're actually referring to is the groove diameter.

Current productions have .429" according to manufacturers website. My old '90's production 1866 Sporting Rifle in 44-40 has a .429" groove diameter I cast all my own bullets for my .44 Specials and 44-40's and size everything .430". All cartridges chamber freely and accuracy is very good.
