bullet seating depth question
« on: March 15, 2017, 08:50:56 PM »

I just got a conversion cylinder in .45 colt from Taylors for my NMA. Im trying to use up a bunch of 175 gr SWC bulets that I have on hand before getting more bullets. The depth that I normally seat the bullets works fine for my new service, the flat portion of the SWC is flush with the case mouth. If I want to use these bullets for the NMA I'd need to seat the bullet so the flat of the SWC is slightly below the case mouth 1/32 of an inch or so. By the flat I mean the flat section that goes from .452 to the SWC pointed part.

My question is is this ok to do? I hope that I was clear enough.

Sure, but keep in mind that if you are using smokeless you will be raising the pressure some by less internal case volume.  Probably not much.

Howdy, Doc Jackson. If you are using the Holy Black check in at the Darksider's Den.

I agree. You are GTG. What lube are you using. For your next purchase of bullets, make sure they are either lubed with a BP compatible lube, like SPG, or bare so you can lube them yourself.

Light bullets are OK, if they give good results, but unusual as galloway said.

Im using SPG to lube them. It is an unusual bullet to use, a friend gave me 250 or so last year. I want to use them up before I get more. Im probably getting 230gr LRN for the rest of my loads, or I might just buy a mold, Ive been casting round balls for a year now with good results.

Not too weird my revolver load is 1.3 c/c FFg and a 175 grain BL bullet in a .45 CA case. Easy on my arthritic wrists but trust me on this you would not want to get shot with it. Pretty close to the original .44 Henry flat load. One day I might get energetic enough and chrono this load and the 200 grain BL bullet rifle load using FFFg powder.
