Some NCOWS History
« on: March 04, 2017, 11:01:34 PM »
I've attached a few photos of some of the early NCOWS shoots. My dad was there from the beginning and was the first Deputy Marshall.

The first image are the founding members.

 From left to right.
Back Row : George Glenn, Unidentified, David Book (my dad and the first NCOWS Deputy Marshall), Duane Hartwig (the first NCOWS Marshall) and Dave Williams
Front Row : the late Bob Anderson and Tom Gray

The Second and third Images is from the first NCOWS shoot held at my Uncle Jerry Books farm in Chariton Iowa. NCOWS members having a meeting.

The fourth image is my dad loading up his Henry rifle at a Buffalo shoot held at the same location but it's my understanding it was not a NCOWS sanctioned shoot, but several members were in attendance.

Thank you. I am currently not a member however, mostly for time and money reasons. But I enjoy talking with dad about the early days of the organization.

Here are a couple more photos.

First photo is my uncle Jerry Book, Verne Book, Tom Gray and the little blonde headed kid is ME!

Second photo my Uncle Jerry Book, Cousin Verne Book and Brother Ethan Book.

Last photo is David Book (my dad) getting a stand on some steel buffalo targets down range.

Jake, I bought the complete set of the "Shootist" magazine last year at the convention, starting with issue no.1.
It's amazing how the organization grew. I joined about 15 years ago when things were in their heyday here in
Iowa. After a few "bumps" in the road it's good to see how well we're doing. This will be the second year the
convention is back in Iowa, and I'm very happy to say it's growing. Last year we had 33 vendor tables, we are
full at 51 tables now. It would sure be nice if you could make it to an event and meet the people and see what
NCOWS is now.

The railroad trestle looks like the one at the Ackley, IA range.

I sure recognize the train trestle in the background in that one photo. Looks like Ackley.

I used to camp under that cottonwood tree, I would take my fishing pole and catch a couple smallmouth bass
for supper. Practice cowboy shooting, shoot 300 yds at the stationary buffalo, and shoot 22s at the small herd
of buffs across the creek, all within a 100 yds  of the campsite. That was cool, sure miss that.

Just did a little checkin, and it looks like I bought my first "cowboy"guns in 2003. I never made it to Ackley to a shoot, but from what I've heard they were "shinen times"! Wish I could have been there with ya John. Campin, shootin and fishin all in the same spot and also probably hangin out with some pretty interesting people, tough to beat that! BTB was probably even casting bullets around the campfire at night. Many thanks to your father Jake, and his pards who dreamt up this shooting sport/game/history lesson/diversion from modern life or whatever the hell it is!

Great photos... thanks !! for posting.

I feel fortunate that I can recall a few names to go with faces in these photos.
Heck, I was am even in a few of them...fortunately I still recognize ME  :o
eh, most days. I'm wearing a black Montana peak hat in these.

"Result-4" photo reminds me of Jerry Book's farm (?).
I was there a couple times maybe? once for a buffalo shoot (?).
Seems I recall the wagon with bufflr hide & even watching a photo or two being taken with the wagon.

Cool stuff. Nice to be reminded of something so special to me.
