Schofield question-update
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:34:31 AM »
I got my new Cimarron Schofield today. The hammer is supposed to have 3 positions, half cock, full cock, and down after firing. When the hammer is down after firing the frame latch won't move and the gun can't be opened.

Here's my question. If I load it with snap caps and pull the trigger, the hammer drops all the way down and the latch won't move. But if I cock the gun and ease the hammer down on an empty chamber while holding the trigger back the hammer doesn't lower all the way and the latch can still be moved.

       What's going on here?

                      Thanks

It isn't suppose to open with the hammer down.  It's suppose to open at half-cock.  If your lowering the hammer gently and it doesn't go all the way down, there is a rough spot/burr/drag spot somewhere that prevents the hammer from full travel without real pressure on the hammer.  I would guess the hammer/hammer channel/lock works could use some judicious rubbin-n-buffin.

What Coffinmaker said.
The hammer down prevents it from opening. It's an original safety feature.

I know it shouldn't open with the hammer down. I see where that's not clear from the way I worded it. I'll try firing it with the snap caps some more and see if any possible burrs smooth out. If not, than I guess I'll have to have someone look at it.

                      Thanks for the answers

Ha! Didn't understood well the first time.

But, what you describe seems related to the hammer block safety that Uberti has added to the Schofield.

From half cock. If you ease your hammer down it won't go all the way forward because of the safety.

The problem I have is that if I ease it down from full cock it won't go all the way down.

I spent some more time with it yesterday and I noticed that if I pull the hammer back from all the way down there is a click that I can hear and feel before I reach half cock and the hammer will stay there.  It's like it has a quarter cock position. I think you're right about it being to do with the safety.

The gun works fine except for this. I'm wondering if I should just not worry about it. The only thing is that after unloading the gun I can't lower the hammer all the way. It stops at this "quarter cock" position.

Will this cause problems down the road?

to be quite honest and not to pick on ya ........ but ......  ::)

Presently yer "over-thinking" it.  Here is the bottom line.  If the the hammer falls when you pul the trigger, and the gun fires every time, you don't have a problem.  If the latch works as advertised at Half Cock, you don't have a problem.  As long as you don't try to carry it around with six loaded, you don't have a problem.  As long as you can get the cap off your bottle of Ale after you shoot, you don't have a problem.  Leave it alone and enjoy playing with it.

PS:  Don't try and run it with BP or Subs.  It won't be a Harmonious outcome.

Thanks Coffinmaker. I suspected it wasn't really a problem but wasn't sure. It's good to hear it from someone who knows more about it than me.

Well, I still haven't fired the gun, only snap caps. When I pulled the trigger today the hammer won't fall all the way. It stops at the "quarter cock" position, so it wouldn't be able to fire.  There has to be something wrong with the safety.

I was going to shoot it for the first time this Monday.  Instead, I'll be sending it back for warranty repair. What a disappointment.

My first Schofield had the same issue, except that the hammer never dropped all the way.   It made me wonder how they test-fired it.  I had to return it to Taylor's, who replaced it.  The second one has been great for several years now.  Maybe it's a family thing,  assuming that Griffith is your last name too.

My hammer doesn't drop all the way now either. Griffith isn't my real name, just a user name.

I hope they don't take too long getting it back to me.

Mine ( actually a #3 )  went bang all 5 times of the first rounds through it .... :)

but hit well left of center  ???  learned something

unlike a SAA with it's narrow trigger and plow handle grip , the #3 trigger is wide and a round almost mop handle like grip.

I had to adjust my point of contact on the trigger to the tip, I also replaced the OEM Walnut with a set of (oval) S&W hard Rubber grips.

adjusting my hold the gun shoots POI

That hammer black safety gismo in the Uberti Schofields can cause problems. It did in both mine and my wifes Schofields. But it doesn't any more ;)

I have to say, as soon as I got any of my repro S@W's, I took the hammer block safety and spring out.

I had been working on several original S@W's for sometime before I bought any new ones. The hammer block safety only seemed to add problems to the over all working of the revolver.

I would consider removing it for as long as I own the gun, but I can't do it myself and don't know anybody who would do it.

I'm not going to confirm or deny that I removed the safety on my Schofield, but it must have fallen out at some point or something because it isn't there anymore  ;).  On the other hand, I did make sure that the initial problems were repaired (in my case a placement gun was shipped) before I did anything with the internals.  I wanted the gun to function right with or without the safety installed.

Well, I finally got my Schofield back from the warranty repair yesterday. Everything seems okay now. It looks like I'll finally get a chance to shoot it. I sure hope there aren't any more problems.
