200 grain .45 Schofield loads for rifle???

For my 1860 Henry and Remington R&D cartridge conversions, I load a "44 Henry duplication load" using a .45 Schofield case, a 200 grain bullet, and 27-28 grains (volume) of BP or substitute.  It gives me 1150 + or - from the Henry and 750ish from the Remingtons.

Does anyone have a load with either Unique or WW231 that will do about 1150ish in a 24" rifle?  I ask because I have about 2-3 pounds each of Unique and WW231 from when I used to load .45 ACP and 44 Special, and I don't want to buy a different powder.

Well, my Remington 1858s with R&D .45 Colt cylinders and my Uberti 1860 Henry HATE the Triple 7 loads I was using (as did my 65 year old arthritic hands!), so it's back to smokeless.  I have some Unique, so I figure for now I'll use about 6.5 grains Unique with the 200 grain bullet in a Schofield case.  Its a medium load. eventually I'll pick up some Trail boss or something, but I have a pound of this to start with.

My first foray into black powder subs was in 45 Colt with 250 grain lead over 777. Talk about a lot of boom for the buck! It was fun but after that first match I relagated the remainder of my 777 to shotshell only. I also cut back to 200 grain lead and switched to APP for all my BP sub shooting and have been happy. I still have several hundred  of those 250 grain 777 rounds loaded up from that reloading session. I'll burn through them someday, possibly when I have to defend myself against charging triceratops or something similar.

I've been following your posts on loading 45 Schofield with great interest as that seems to be where I am headed for my 1860 Henry ammo tinkering.  I'll use APP and a 225 grain bullet and see where that takes me. I am also wanting to use that in my 1858.

Card carrying WIMP here.  Recoil wimp that is.  I also have a Henry Flat Duplication load.  I just don't shoot it much.  I have a preference for the Cowboy 45 Special case.  If I'm looking to duplicate the Henry Flat, I load the case to the base of a 200Gr RNFP, with 3f APP.  (I really like APP).  I find the load a mite "snappy" in my hand guns.  SO:

My preferred load is the C45S case with 160Gr RNFP and 2f APP.  Two reasons.  Lighter recoil in the Hand guns.  My Main Match hand guns are Pietta 44 Navies, rebuilt into 44 Snubbies (3 1/4 inch barrels).  Most of the time, I shoot em as Cap Guns.  If the weather is some dicy for Percussion, I drop in R&D Type 45 Colt conversion cylinders and bang away with the C45S rounds.

All 4 of my 1860 Henry rifles are modified to run the C45S round.  I can stuff 18 of the little suckers in a 24 inch rifle (one of those) and more than sufficient rounds in my Carbines and Trapper.  Of course, the rifle doesn't have enough recoil to spit at with any BP/Sub load so it really doesn't matter for the rifle.  I just dodge recoil in the hand guns.  The C45S runs thru my Rifles like wet grain thru a Goose.

Hodgon shows 6.2/231/877 f.p.s. / 13,000 CUP with a 200 gr bullet  in the schofield. Add about 200 f.p.s. for the velocity in a rifle.

I use a 200 grain Big Lube bullet with either nitro or Gun Powder in a .45 CA case to feed my  1860 Henry with good success. You may have some feeding problems with that shorter case. I had to use a Happy Trails modified lifer in my rifle. If you are using an 1866 or 1873 that probably be necessary. For the modification in an1860 check with Coffinmaker for the way to use an allen screw for the cartridge stop.

I have no feeding issues using the 200 grain Schofields in my 1860 Henry, straight from the factory.  I still have a set screw modified lifter, though, from back when I did Civil war re-enactment, and used heavily crimped 38-40 and 44-40 empty cases as blanks in my 45 Colt Henry.

Tuolumne,,to try to answer your request,,i shoot 44/40,cb loads ,,,start 5.5gr(min),,6.5(max),,I load 6.2grs. ,,very easy recoil  ,,off hand easy 3"groups at 25-30 yds. All with WW231,,Rossi 92,20"carbine,,200gr. cast ,.

WW 231 is a great powder.  I ended up with 7.1 grains of Unique.  Very low recoil in pistol, and dead nuts on from the Uberti 1860.  A bit dirty, but after years of shooting BP, its nothing.

My 1860 Henry works well with 1.3 c/c FFFg (weight unknown) and the 200 grain Big Lube. The open tops use 1.3 c/c FFg (weight unknown) and a 175 Big Lube. Both cased in the .45 CAS which I call the ".45 Short". I prefer to use the powder of the times, they were made for Gun Powder, so I use Gun Powder. The lifter is a Happy Trails modification and works likke a charm..
