Loaded up some 45-70 ammo
« on: December 25, 2016, 06:15:28 PM »
Howdy long range shooters,

I loaded up some of my DD-45-70 500 grain semi spitzer twin lube grove bullets.  Carefully cast with Lyman 1:20 #2 alloy.  Half with Swiss 1.5Fg and half with Old Einsford 1.5Fg.  I'll take notes and report back, but I'm expecting that they will impact about the same out to 500 yards.  (That's the limit of Hay Hollow Range)

We established, contrary to detractors, that the big 500 grain boolits fly very well out to 500 yards and beyond.  Now, I'm wanting to see if OE or SW powder makes a significant difference in accuracy.

Ok, it's Christmas here and it'll be a few moons before we can get on the range and not freeze our butts off.  But, I'm loadin' and the season's coming.

Good luck and enjoy ....

I just received 5 lbs of Old E and am looking forward to loading up a few rounds myself ... I use 2f for all my loading (45/70, 45 colt and 38 sp)

I have been a Swiss man so looking forward to see how the old e works out ...

Ho Hargrave,

My side kick and his lad live in Libertyville.  Alias Bushwhack Jacksack and Cowboy Ken.  Bushwhack is my Son in Law and Ken is my Grand Son.  Maybe you could partner up with them come April and enjoy some shoots together.

Dastardly,

You know what ... I think I need to update my profile! ... I moved 2 years ago from Libertyville/Grayslake (IL) area to Houston .. and have not looked back.

I love it down here. There is a range every few miles, a gun store on every corner and a culture that embraces the "boom-stick".

Not to mention I can go over to Collectors Firearms and drool for a day any time I want. The last time I was in there, they had more than a dozen original Sharps Rifles (My favorite by the way) and let me man-handle them.

I found a cowboy specific private gun club with an outstanding SASS range and the list goes on.

So Mr. Dastardly, I assume we'll be reading of the magnificent success of those bullets when you get thru shooting the America Creedmoor cup and NRA bptr regional at the Winnequah club after the the awards are handed out on June 11?

Howdy John,

Would a win at the Rock River Regulators event impress you?  My bullets took three awards there last year.

Hargrave,

I invite you to come try out the Thunder River Renegades - also in Magnolia.  A much larger club with much longer range capabilities.  Check us out at www.thunderriverrenegades.com \

As always, there is some local history between the clubs.  I urge you to check us out in person.  I'm the club President.  Feel free to call me - check the club website for my phone number.
